In a different area a few months ago I saw one take a wood pigeon. I thought they took much smaller prey but I'm no expert. Anyone enlighten me?

Good for the sparrow hawk ! magpies are bullies ( they raid other birds nests and kill their young / eat the eggs ) but the sparrow hawk is capable of catching something the size of rabbit`s . and normally only when food is scarce !

Ah!...the drama of the animal kingdom! In the inner city?
I think so!
Once we had possum in my industrial park here within So. Cal.
Los Angeles area.
Fist I thought they were ...
big rats with babies on their backs. Nocturnal in nature and shy unless cornered.
One day someone abandoned a cat.
Then their was another one....
Word got out this is where you abandon cats you are tired of and do so with little guilt because now that it's not a cute kitten and needs shots and to be spayed you got other things to do so just dump that old scratchy cat because the cat people will soon come and feed them...for years!
And the cat people did...now we have inner bred feral cats everywhere and instead of trapping the cats and elliminating
the unchecked breeding the cat people decided this is their new
abandon cat zone and bring in all the cats they round up!
Cat people seam to be crazy old ladies that think they are doing Gods work and they do this work for him outta their dodge dart station wagons or F100 Ford van...you think they might be misdirected but nice folks ...not the case ...they keep you on their "animal hater "list and will key your car if you object to their mistaken care of these sick cats and that it is really a huge mistreatment of these unwanted and wild cats to keep breeding them unchecked and now they have generations of feral cats
that are sick and shotless and die sad deaths from neglected short and flea ridden lives!
Sad, sad, sad...
Why didn't ever think that nature would solve the problem itself?
Soon small grey coyote family appears from somewhere ...the L.A. river?
Feral cats gone!
Now possum are back and no crazy cat lady either!
Circle of Life...isn't it perfect!

Not surprising. I once saw a Peregrin Falcon take a Black Skimmer, which is just about the same size, and carry it up to a water tower to eat.

Sparrow Hawks are very beautiful birds. They are called Kestrels, but they are in the Falcon family.

It is quite common, especially when food is short.
