Grow up.
There is no "Best" exhaust, you need to explain what engine you got for a start, but from my own experience it has a black end with a maximum 2" round single tail pipe, the Chrome tail pipe (s) and red silencer boxes attract plod like flies to a dead hedgehog.
You want a decent system, the smallest diameter down the pipe is what hurts the performance, and as the exaust volume reduces as it cools towards the rear of the car the tail pipe can be slightly smailler than the intermediate pipe.
Usually a larger front pipe and larger diameter cat off of something with a bigger engine work wonders but make sure it is well warmed up before the MOT and that they can do it straight away as it will take for ever to warm up, actually the complete exhaust off the next engine size up, or the Turbo, will usually produce a useful power increase if you have an injection engine, with a carb you have to start messing around with jets if you fiddle with the exhaust.
IDownside of sports exhausts is needing ear protectors on the motorway, and getting pulled by plod
Up side is more torque and power but, with a few exceptions sticking a big red box with twin tailpipes on the end of a standard exhaust produces less power, uses more fuel and makesyou look a prat.
You might do better to sort the suspension and brakes to turbo spec, Try 185/55 15 or 195/55 15 tyres and alloys if you have 1600cc or less, and learn to drive the thing hard before you join the club of people who find something with more power than handling to be bloody lethal, while a really well set up chassis is bloody good fun even with a gutless wonder dragging it around.

Your going to cover that 15 year old car with money then decide that you should of bought a new Ford. Put performance parts on an old motor try to get more revs and more throttle response. Then the next sound you will here KA-BOOM!

Full decat Magnex exhaust system.
Viper induction kit.
If money is no object, rebuild the whole engine, strengthen key parts. Maybe bore and skim the head. Add a supercharger/turbo. Super Chip it. Oh uprate brakes!

putting on a whole new exhaust system isn't going to gain you much horsepower, unless its turbo charged, but turbo charging your 1992 escort would knacker your engine, unless you have a new headgasket and it has low mileage, then you'd have to upgrade the brakes. just get a K&N air filter, cheapish and may gain you a few HP.
