My indoor cat likes to sit in the hall outside our bedrooms wailing at night. She doesn't appear to be looking at anything in particular. Why do cats do this?

If she isn't spayed, she's "looking for love". Have her spayed. If your bedroom doors are closed, let her in.

Cats are nocturnal souls, but will be quiet if they can sleep with you. Unless they're in heat, that is!

Ah he wants to play, cats dont usually sleep through the night, and they are most playful when they've had a sleep (sleep that is, not nap). Also some cats are very attached to their owners, some even worry because, there owners havnt responded to them in a while. As soon as you respond he'll come to you. I know it's annoying in the middle of the night when you need to sleep, one of mine does it too, she chews towels and bedspreads because she' s worrying that she's not heard from me in a while. After she has a reponse she'll go to sleep again. As to a solution, the only thing I can do is leave her in her own bed in the kitchen and shut the door, I still hear her sometimes but I need to sleep and she needs to learn that everthing is ok.

My cat does the same. We had adopted her about 6 weeks ago, she is two years old. She was a straight cat but someone had given her food we got her from our vet.

She is very quiet and sleeps most of the DAY but about 4-5am she wails, she sleep with me, she is inside cat. She is still afraid from the world. If I call her name she will come back to bed sometimes she will run like crazy, I started to clap my hands and call her name she had stopped doing it.

If your cat has been altered than I would assume that it is because of the terrible owners of other cats that do not have them spayed or neutered. Night time is the usual time for these people that should not own pets, decide to let them out. Try using a squirt bottle with plain water in it to squirt your cat when he she is displaying the annoying habit. If she hasn't been spayed yet due to her age...she would be calling for a male.

MIne does that too....we think he just wants attention and has energy pent up from being in the house all day while we are at work.

My husband like to think the cat is like a vampire that needs to be invited into the room. Once we call him he jumps on the bed and curls himself into a ball and sleeps.

Is she spayed? Most likely in heat and talking to a male friend outside.

Have her spayed or at night put her in another room so you can't hear her.

My cat used to do that because I wouldn't let him in my bedroom at night because he was quite boistrous, but he still wanted my company, it made me feel so guilty!

She's nocturnal, and probably wants to get out and about.
Also, cats are pretty territorial, so maybe she senses some other feline on her turf?
