What's your criteria for 'best'? Efficiency? Safety? Passenger Comfort? Expense?
If so, then can't be Concorde--ineffecient, unsafe, cramped, expensive.
I quite like Airbus 330 and Boeing 777 on transatlantic routes (vs. 747, MD10, 757, 767 which I have also flown transatlantic). KLM and Northwest have good configuration for 330s and 777s.

I say the Concord. It may not have been profitable or sold in large numbers, but it was a technological marvel even compared to today's aircraft (you can't enjoy a glass of champagne at Mach 2 on any other plane). As for safety, it was the most thoroughly tested airliner of its time. It had almost 30 years of passenger operation with only one fatal accident that could have easily brought down any other aircraft.
I don't think any other aircraft has so fully captured the attentions and imaginations of the world.
The 737 is the K-car of airliners. I've worked on them. They are dirty and beatup, even the new ones. The Concorde is a Rolls Royce.
In use today, the 777 by far. Airbus almost had it with the A330 and now they are hurrying up to the past with the A380. Four engined airliners are dinosaurs.

I'd have to say
Currently in use: The Boeing 737, nicknamed "Stubby" is pretty common here in the States.
Boeing 757, 767, and the longer range 777 jetliners and 747-400 jetliners
Airbus: A319(I flew on a 319 with United and it's pretty comfortable as far as seating is concerned),A330, A340 and I think the A380 has potential once it is in service.
Past: Douglas DC-3, which besides being a commercial airliner did duty as a transport during WW2, and the Lockheed Constellation, Electra, and the Boeing China Clippers from the 1930's(flying boats)and prop-driven Stratoliners of the early to mid 1950's!

The best commercial airline that I have flown on is SINGAPORE AIRLINES Boeing 747 and Boeing 777. Both of these international class planes have the following facilities including:
T.V with games and movies
Music system
Breakfast, lunch, dinner served
Comfortable seats
Spacious planes
This airline has all the comforts you will need for a comfortable flight.
Happy flying!

The 777 is the best modern airliner today, until the 787 comes along I am sure. As far as all time, the 727 is a great bird. It can land on some mighty short runways as well as gravel runways.

Reliability, ingenuity and ease of maintenance: Any airliner that was built by Mcdonnell Douglas. Efficiency: Any Boeing airliner. Sad examples of airliners in all respects: Anything built by Airbus, yes some are efficient but that is based on the engines which are not built by them.

For all around in service today probably the Boeing 737. For all time piston and jet no one could better the record of the DC-3. For all around jet of all time both Boeing's original 707 and 747.

For general all-around purposes...probably the Boeing 737 series...in OVERALL terms of pax and freight capacity, range and speed, take-off and landing performance, noise, fuel consumption, spares availability and support, etc.
Of all time, probably the DC-3...still in use and profitable after 71 years. 2nd would be the Boeing 727 series.
