Ive work for the airline industry for many many years . Ive seen infant children that were flown by themselves to where their parents were. Some were for adoptions {matter of days old !}others were because of divorce visitation. These were 12 hour or more flights and where they had to even change planes. So I dont think there is a distance or an age of a child that matters.

There shouldn't be a minimum age.

While people do not enjoy "The crying baby syndrom", it would be unfair to tell someone that they are not allowed to vacation in Australia or Japan from here in the US because they have an infant.

My understanding is that the airlines don't recommend long disatnce flights for babies before 3 months (because of health issues - newborn babies are not as resistant to the germs in the recycled air). Don't know if this is enforced by way of a rule though.

There isn't really one. If going overseas, it takes a little while to get a passport for the little one. My daughter flew from Australia to the US when she was 20 days old.
