Well the wearing of the veil, that’s a big question. With reference to the teacher, then no. Facial expressions are how some children gauge the importance what is being said to them.

In schools today, teachers find controlling students behaviour quite difficult. The best way to control and teach a class, is with a common ground and mutual respect. Teachers and students already have a huge void between them and wearing a veil would only make interacting with children harder. – If Jack straw finds it difficult to understand, or just be comfortable talking to people with veils, then how are children suppose to cope?

It’s the same for school children. The idea of a uniform is to unite the children and breakdown barriers (originally) of wealth, so children would become friends with other children of other social backgrounds. This same policy should be kept to ensure children have a mixture of friends not just from other social backgrounds but other religions too.

With most government agencies that require a uniform, nothing should be worn, from crosses to the little Jew hats (I don’t know what they are called, sorry) to veils or anything – Apart from the turban, where their hair is so long its need for health and safety reasons.

But in public each to their own. I understand that some people feel that Moslems with their face completely covered are not freely integrating themselves with British society, (but that’s what you get when you celebrate muliculturism without choosing the native culture as more central than all foreign cultures.)

The use of any headscarf should never be disputed as much as the veil, but that because the veil has hundreds of years of oppression of women attached to it. Although most people now days choose to wear the veil, it is still a symbol oppression and will always be received dubiously.

To the best of my knowledge wearing of the veil is not a requirement of the religion, but a matter of personal choice. In fact in certain countries where Muslim women were forced to wear a veil they saw it as a sign of subservience, and dispelled with it as soon as they could. Some even went so far as to adopt a more western style of dress. This is not just my view, it was reported in the media for weeks, including interviews with Muslims.

As for 'their rights', as I saw mentioned in one of the answers, why should they be treated differently. If I try to enter certain places wearing my hat I am asked to remove it for security reasons, as my face can not clearly be seen on CCTV. This I am happy to do. ( This is also the case for anyone whose head wear is not a part of their religious belief.) In these circumstances is it right that a veil could be worn to cover a face, but not a hat to cover a head.

If non Muslim Brits are prepared to follow these rules shouldn't everybody regardless of their race and religion. That way we all have the same rights and perhaps people will stop bitching about issues like this, and turn their attention to the more important issues facing humanity.

Should youngsters be allowed to go around with hoods over their heads? Should punks be allowed to pierce their faces ?
should Football fans be allowed to wear football shirts and shout abuse?
Give me a break most Muslims are good people. There are far more anti social elements amongst the" christian" groups.
I don't agree with veils but then I don't like a lot of things. there are so many people , Non- Muslims who hide. Should Jews stop wearing the skull cap? I have to take my helmet off in the bank. Do muslim women have to?

Your belief shouldn't been displayed .... the problem with Muslims is the need to "show" what they are. God doesn't look at your appearance, he created you . He is only interested in your heart and your love for Him.To answer you its more of a cultural thing and yes its also an excuse, because if you know about ways of living in a country then don't go there, but if you have to go then compromise!

This is a very touch subject and I feel the British and the Muslim will never agree as their priorities are quite different. I feel that there is a time and a place, my understanding was that the lady in question was willing to uncover unless there was a male member of staff in the class. As a society we place alot of importance in seeing peoples faces and expressions.
After reading ncgd reply, I was concerned for her, I am a nurse and have been for a long time and a large part of our job is communication, verbal and non verbal, patients need to see our faces as this helps to them to understand us and trust us.I feel that you will have an uphill struggle wearing your veil, but that is your choice.

Yes and no.

Outside in free air, down the shops, in the home, in the pub, etc, that fine.

However as soon as you step inside a government controlled agency such as school or military base then we ALL must follow the rules for that area.

This is a Christian society. Our rules and values are all born from Christian beliefs. When other cultures come to our country they will simply have to accept there will be times when they have no choice but to follow our rules; because it is the Christian way.

Their own way for what? Hijab is a religious obligation for muslim women and no one has anything to do with it other than the muslim women who choose to obey Allah. Hijab is covering all the body except the face and the hands and this has nothing to do with teaching children either. I would agree to taking the niqab (coving the face too) off when teaching children.

I am a muslim veiled woman who is very proud to be both muslim and veiled and would not alllow any one to interfer in my choices, expecially those that have to do with my religion, since thay cause no harm to no one.

Divine, WHEN IN ROME, DO AS THE ROMANS DO; this means that all foreign women should be veiled (either hijab or even niqab) when they are in a muslim country instead of walking around almost naked otherwise we should be very frustrated!! Right? I am not sure I understand what you are frustrated about to be honest with you.

Thank you for accepting me for what I am :)

Peace

to devine_gem22..

who told you that they will force you to cover your face in muslim countries? that's why i wish if americans visit other countries in the world than the US. they just seems like they are the last people to know what's going on around the world.

go buy a Arabic channel, do you even see how the majority of women on tv are showing their hair?

and how will the veil (covering the hair) of a woman will break the way of life of the country? thanks God, at least there are women who still fear God in this life and time. then Nuns should take off their clothes as well.

Absolutely they should have the right to wear the veil! The only time I believe they shouldn't is when getting their picture taken for some kind of official photo ID and they should be required to take it off for a moment when the photo ID is inspected to verify identity (such as during a police traffic stop or at the airport).
