Everybody knows the name Glenfiddich, so it's what you're going to hear most often. I'm surprised there haven't been more mentions of Glenlivet.

Some of the less mainstream (and much better) for your price range:
Glenrothes
Macallan 18 year http://www.themacallan.com/index_usa.html
Talisker 20 year
Ardberg
Glenmorangie

Here's a really great list of the best single malts for the money:

Between 100 and 200 $ is a large budget for a single malt, for that you can do much better than Glennfiddich which has been marketed very aggressively in the US which is why so many people are recommending it.

Go to a decent liquor store and ask the people there, there are many styles of Whisky and it may be that you might prefer a highland to a lowland or even an island malt without knowing it.
Be wary of age as well, the older the whisky the more it will cost but it will not necessarily taste better.

If forced to I would recommend a Glenmorangie, it isn 't as 'peaty' as many but it is IMHO a damn sight finer that 90% of them out there. It also comes in Port or Sherry barrel aged varieties which although gimmicky do actually give a nice finish to the whisky. Unfortunately it would only cost around 50$ so buy three or four!!

My favorite single-malt scotch is Laphroaig. It is available in 10 year, 15 year, and 30 year-old versions. Although I have only had the 10 year version, I prefer it to many other far pricier scotches. It has a distinctly oily mouthfeel (which is much better experienced than read about), and a very pronounced, up-front flavor of peat smoke. When people read the word "smoke" they tend to think of hickory, barbeque, or cigarettes. This smoke flavor is more in the vein of dark toast, and blends wonderfully with the flavors of the malt.

Expect to pay between $40-55 for the 10 year-old, $65-75 for the 15 year-old, and about $200 for the 30 year-old version, if you can find it.

Single Malts vary in taste and flavour so much, from lighter lowland malts to darker, peatier highland malts - so it is all a matter of the taste of the person you are buying for. Go to a shop which specialises and ask the advice of the shopkeeper.

Look for MacCullens 12 year old Single Malt.

It's the top of the class!

Unfortunately, it's only available in Glasgow, Scotland, UK.
