I beleive that the teachings of buddha, bible and quran do not teach you exactly what's all about, they merely point the fingers at the right direction for you. you alone would need to walk the path to get enlightened.
If one is told the smell of roses, but never in his entire life seen a rose before, then he would never ever understand how a roses' smell like. You could use thousand of words to describe the smell of roses, one can only gauge the spirit of your words not the exact smell. I have noted christianity's obseession with the bible, and that cause the problems of blind faith and rigidity. What do you have to say?

Yes, the writings are there to help guide us, but we must do it.

In Buddhist teachings, this is definitely stressed --- direct experience. You might find this verse from the Dhammapada relevant to your analogy.
>>start<<
Verse 64. The Ignorant Cannot Benefit From The Wise
Though all through life the fool
might wait upon the wise,
no more Dhamma can he sense
than spoon the taste of soup.
Explanation: The fool, even if he kept the company of a wise person intimately over a life-time, will not become aware of the nature of experience, just as a spoon will not know the taste of soup.

YOU ask me what do I think, well you said religions can not be taught, but it has to be experience by oneself, This is my thought, Religions CAN NOT BE TAUGHT, Because Religion is NOT an experience, let say you take ONE YEAR on each religions, & since there are over 1000 kinds of Religions, then by the time you are tught everyone for ONE year, you would be over 1000 yrs old. Now I will correct your question, Salvation is not a religion but an experince, & that salvation can ONLY come from GOD, through the shed blood of Jesus Christ.

You're right when you say religion cannot be taught. I think so too. Rituals can be taught, and the reason why we do them can be taught. Many ppl of different faiths regularly practice these rituals but completely miss the point of them. Essentially they're supposed to make u a better human being - that's the purpose of religion.

you are absolutely right. Unless you yourself drink water your thirst will not be quenched. So each one has to try by himself to find god. It is not possible to put God in a frame work as atheist want it. God is beyond all and his ways are also unique.

even 99 years in a tiny lifetime will not provide squat from a universe that has been around for countless eons. we are pretty much screwed.

I have to say that you are correct. You have to experience something before you can fully understand it.
