If staying in the city...the lincoln park/lakeview area is very nice.
The Willows Hotel is very pretty....My sister stayed there while here on a business trip...it was very comfortable and she had excellent service. It is in a great neighborhood...close to the Lincoln Park Zoo..(free and open all year)
If staying in the suburbs...Naperville is very nice.. (about 30 minutes from chicago) .it has a great downtown area with lots of great restaurants and shopping!

I liked the Near North Side when I've been there. I stayed at the Embassy Suites. Lots of cool things to do in the area and many can be walked to. If you want to see something else, downtown is a short cab ride away, and so is Second City Improv. They're hilarious.

The Swisshotel has a great view of the lake and any fireworks at Navy Pier. They also have great food.

well i recon at hotel ibis cause of its great rooms and cable for free and the thing i love most is its own little water park
