Yes, I won't leave my kids with anyone but family that I trust wholeheartedly. Call me paranoid, I don't care, lol. I've seen too many horror stories on the news.

I was molested as a child not only by a male babysitter, but also by a female babysitter growing up. Since I have had my children, I have never really allowed anyone outside of family watch my children. My youngest did go to a daycare for a while, but if was after interviews, and much research. That was only because I moved to a city where I had no family, my job transferred me and I had to work. But that woman loved my daughter, and I can see and feel it. Since I came back to Los Angeles, my daughter only stays with family. And now that she is 8 yrs old, I am even cautious about leaving her with teenage family members because sometimes the are manish and like to play those "sexual games" that sometime go on with kids. Years ago there were no trustworthy babysitter's...the world is getting worst, not better. Do research, check child predator websites for ALL states, check references, cross check references. It takes time and effort but the consequences of not taking the time could be life altering.

Actually, I totally trust babysitters. It's a fact that babysitters will care better for your child than you will. You know how life is at your home. You know how often you have to check on your child, you know how things work.
Babysitters don't, and they are usually more vigilant with a child than the child's own parent. That's not to say that the parent neglects their child, it just means that where you would let your 4 year old play in their room by themself because you know they're not going to get into trouble, a babysitter wouldn't, because they don't know they won't get hurt.
In comparison, there are way less accidents and deaths to children in the hands of a babysitter than there are accidents and deaths in the hands of their own parents or other family member. It's a fact. More accidents happen when the parent is at home then when a babysitter is present.
Babysitter accidents just get more media coverage and attention. If a child in the care of his father drowns in a pool, not many people talk about it. If a child in the care of a babysitter drowns in a pool, the world knows about it.

I am sad, my babysitter retired this year. She was moving into her 60's and a couple years ago recieved custody of her granddaughter. She just couldn't do it all anymore. I think there are good childcare providers out their still. It just takes time to find that right one. I have a friend with 5 kids, the oldest (17) has watched my kids many times. Shes very good with them, as she is with her siblings that are 2,6,8,9.
I tend to go with those I know and have been around.
I will not use public daycares. I don't know if I will look for another private daycare provider.

No, you just have to be really careful who you choose. My babysitter is great. She is 17 and brings over all sorts of activities for the kids to do and her mother even comes over too to help out sometimes. The kids love her. They are from my church and work with the kids their so I see how they are. Just have to be careful these days. I would never leave my kids with just anyone. I didnt have a babysitter for a long time too because of this.

No, think a lot of times the problem is not enough screening. Also you only hear about the bad cases. I have been a nanny for six years and I am very good at what I do, so we are not all bad. Always make sure you check references and not just ones from their friends and family they should have experience. If you can't trust someone never let them around your children. I always recommend going through an agency. If you are just going out for the night choose someone you know well.

In many regards yes. When I look at teenage girls nowadays, I see immaturity at it's very finest. Most cannot even take care of themselves properly, need alone a helpless little baby, so times have changed for sure.
When I started babysitting I was around 11 or 12 years of age, and I was doing everything that a mom had to do. I was changing diapers, burping, feeding, and bathing, all on my own. Today I hear teenage girls complain about the most stupid of things such as, "I'm not changing dirty diapers".
Pathetic.

yes, unfortunately this is one reason my husband and I dont have as many date nights as we could. I am scared to leave our son with anyone, just seeing how my 14yr old step daughter and her friends are so immature, I mean, I was babysitting at that age and think i was alot more mature,, id never let her or a friend her age saty with my son alone. And as for stragers, not in this day and age. I think if you have no family members to help out Id go thru a agency, it may cost a little more, but the people go thru lots of screening processes.

When you are married into the life of Law Enforcement, you don't trust anybody anymore. I'm glad that I am lucky I have my mother-in-law that watches my son. I know that most parents aren't that fortunate to have that b/c it would really be hard trying to decide about a babysitter.

depending on the age, older babysitters that are mother's read up on the latest things to protect children, but young kids don't. I would say it's a little better, since people try to put the baby on his or her back now.
