You're right smartftp is not free, nor is cuteftp.

AceFTP is freeware and SmartFTP is free for private, non-commercial use.

If you use Firefox, then I recommend Fireftp. A lovely intuitive ftp extension to firefox.

I recently came across FireFTP, which is an extension to Firefox. If you use firefox (which you should - http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/ ) then I'd highly recommend it. The functionality is fairly basic, but at the same time it does everything I desperately need...
