Only add one food at a time. Start with the rice cereal, thin, then gradually start making it thicker, instructions on how to mix it will be on the box. After your baby has been on that for around 4 or 5 days, add something else, like mashed banana (no, it's not too thick) or you can buy the baby food kind that is even thinner. The boiled potato is good too, and applesauce and pear baby food. Then you can start adding foods with color, like carrots, peaches, etc. But like I said, only introduce one new food at a time, that way if your baby has an allergic reaction you will know which food caused it. My daughter actually got rashes from bananas and the nurse at her Dr.'s office said her children had too and that it's fairly common. I didn't give her bananas anymore when she was a baby, but she can eat them now. And be careful with the berry flavored baby foods, my daughter would get sever diaper rashes after eating anything with berries, like the cranberry-applesauce or strawberry-applesauce baby foods, even though she was quite a bit older by the time we tried to give her those foods. The rice cereal can be bland, but after you've introduced apple sauce or pear baby food, and know that your baby isn't allergic, you can mix it with the rice cereal for sweetness and flavor, my daughter loved either of those mixed with her rice cereal.

Rice cereal is always suggested first because it is extremely rare that the child will be allergic to it. But if you are doing mashed banana and such, and the baby is fine, keep with it. Just make sure it is mashed very very well!!!!

The other reason I would suggest rice and vegetables first is that for some reason (at least it appears that way to me) kids who start out on vegetables seem to like them while kids who start off on sweets only want sweets later!

The amount to feed? Until baby turns their head away and doesn't want any more. Probably just a tablespoon or two at first. Don't depend on the solid food for feeding, make it for fun for awhile. In other words, don't feed the baby solid food when they are hungry, feed them breast milk or formula. Give the solid food at regular meal times, when the family sits down to eat.

If he seems to be tolerating these fine then I would slowly introduce one new thing at a time things like veggies, avacado, rice cereal. Some children have no problems with allergies and others do. If they do have allergies and youare introducing too many new foods at once it can be hard to know what is causing it and then you have to start over and this can frustrate the poor child. Also baby's digestive systems are not set up and mature enough to handle all these table foods at once so just keep that in mind. I know it is fun when they are able to eat, but remember too that baby's tummys are only as big as their fist. The more food you train your child to eat their tummy will expand. You can set your child up for overeating and obesisty. I would continue how you are introducing only one food at a time.

sorry about some of the other people's RUDE remarks above...

the foods just depend on the baby! it is true that SOME people start with cereals mixed with formula and spoon feed it BUT, there really is not "RIGHT or WRONG".

my babies enjoyed sweet potatos and bananas and ironically they were the first two foods i introduced! it is good to introduce only one new food a month IN CASE your child has an allergic reaction (then you know EXACTLY what caused it).

CONGRATS on your spoon feedings :) this is where the real fun begins! oh, and the amounts and how often are COMPLETELY up to you... but when i would sit down for a meal with the family i would feed the baby at the table at the same time (including them in our routine). the rest of the time i bottle fed... until the baby was bigger and DEMANDED more food :)

It sounds like you are on the right track. I would say you can give them anything just about that can be gummed up easily. It depends a lot on how many teeth your child has too. The more teeth, the easier to start chewing. Look in the baby food aisle at the Gerber food products, even if you don't buy them it will give you some ideas. Also talk to your doctor about what is age appropriate. Oh, and as I remember I was told not to give my daughter strawberries until after age 2 ... something about allergies.

At 4 mos you start cereal, at 6 mos you are supposed to start with vegetable one at a time for a week to make sure the aren't allergic. Then you try another. You are supposed to do vegetables then meats and lastly desserts.

I always fed my son mashed potatoes and those little entrees,he loved them.mashed bannannas and stuff your on the right track just take it slow just in case of allergys because if your child has food allergys and you have already introduced your child to all these things you will have to start all over again. good luck.

You need to ask your doctor before you do any of this.

At six months it should have been rice cereal only.

NO PEANUTS PEANUT BUTTER OR HONEY.

Mashed banana is too thick, he should be on thin cereal....call a doctor.
