We're not talking James Bond here. Torture is normally not used to extract information but to suppress opposition. It takes many forms: Consider the parents of a four month old child being separated from their son, but still being able to hear the screams from the next cell where boiling water was being poured over his penis. Just one example.

In a recent poll 29% of people in the UK said that torture could be used to prevent terrorists attacks. I find this appalling. Just want to know what you think. I work with survivors of torture and can give many more examples.

I didn't read about it. It happened to my step-son's cousin, and yes, I've seen his penis.

Torture happens everywhere. I never implied the UK or the USA did this to a baby. I just can't take it that people think it's sometimes acceptable. You want more gruesome details - I'll give you them.

yes absolutely... no one on earth has the right to inflict pain on another... no form of torture is acceptable, under any circumstances...

Do you think when they said torture might be ok in extreme circumstances that they were saying it would be ok to take an innocent 4 month old child and pour boiling water over his penis to make a parent break? Because somehow that doesn't sound like the Brits I know, but who am I to say? I'm not from Great Britain.

It's a question of perspective. What exactly was the survey question asked and who was it asked to? (Makes a massive difference to the outcome).
Should the international community use military intervention to prevent genocide? Should we have invaded Iraq? Same question that will almost certainly get you two different answers.
30% think torture is ok, given that the media reguarly trot out the figures that 70% of UK muslims agree with the bombings of 9/11 and 7/7, I'm surprised that the 30% wasn't reported as higher (assuming a white middle class population were questioned to get this response).
The quote of "Lies, damn lies and statstics" maybe should have "opinion polls" added to it.

Torture in any form mental or physical by any nation proves that we have not come away from barbaric acts.

People who commit such atrocities on people have a sick and warped mind extracting information like this does not mean the truth anyone under this type of interrogation will say anything to stop the pain.

And then we judge the others of being uncivilized. If people think that torture will be the key to our protection, then we are stepping many years back and we become nothing better than those that we judge. Think about it! Many mistakes happen. What if they arrest someone innocent and torture this person, or they just arrest someone for just having many different beliefs and possibly poses a threat? Is this reminding us of democracy?
I would never bare to have anything like this in my conscience, would any of you?

i think the way the sas interagate could be classed as torture but its more of a mental battle of to receive info ,if you dont know they use stress positions white noise and manipulasion methods to disoriantate the mind into giving info ,i agree with this method but using electic charges and all that sort of torture methods is just totally wrong theres no need and the people that have done it have to wonder what it would be like if they were in the shoes of the tortured.

The police should torture anyone who says that they are in favour of torture. Just in case that person is a terrorist pretending to be an outraged patriot in order to blend in. If they are innocent then they'll be released eventually.

Well that wouldn't surprise me. With all these attacks going on I'm sure the population think that if we caught them we could torture them to inflict the pain they've caused and to extract the information we need to find the source and eliminate it.

I'm not sure what you mean, and how do u know that 30% of the UK think this is acceptable? I think not. And to the veggies who answered, slaughtering animals does not equate to torture, grow up.

Where on earth did you read about that ?
At least I don't think the western worlds torture is as prevelant and barbaric as the third world countries where it is a norm for even the most trivial of reasons.

why is it that when its the terrorist who do the killing and beheading of the people in the west, people don't make too much noise about it, and them saying that they are doing it because it the law of eye for an eye and when we do it we call it torture and everybody else including those people who beheaded some innocent people start complaining, why can't we not give them a taste of their own medicine.
