This is the forth time I've come across this question!!! It's because the thermostats in toasters have such a wide tolerance range that they need to account for any differences between them. They work to extremes basically, from not doing anything to burning your toast to cinders. Also, they have to take into account if the bread is frozen and very thick.

I found that last night. Put it on a low setting you know won't cook your toast & then heat it per minute til you get the result you need. Scrape the burnt bit off your toast, & it should taste fine.

...and why do my in-laws always turn the toaster to that setting every time they visit?
I think they believe it's not real toast unless it's belching vast clouds of toxic smoke and setting off every alarm in the house!

Long story: My dad used to travel around Europe a lot playing guitar in various house bands. At one set of digs in Scotland, back in the day way before 7-11 and 24hr shopping, Mrs McTavish burnt the entire toast for the band on their first morning at her guesthouse. "Don't worry Mrs McTavish", said my father, "that's just how I like it."
For the next three months he looked on in envy every morning as the rest of the guys got lightly browned, fresh smelling toast with butter dripping off, while Mrs McTavish served him up a plate of charcoal "Just how you like it Mr Beech!"
