EN is the state of hardness and alloy and yes it's stil in use today. The nuclear industries which includes submarines use a lot of EN57 stainless steel.
All exotic metals that are quality controlled must have the cast number stamped on them and have a certificate with it's alloys and cast numbers etc listed before it is accepted for machining.
It must be tracable right down to the foundry. They are usually non-destructively tested also.

I think that's an old standard, how you have stuff like:

Stainless Steel 18/10 where the stainless steel is graded.
