By waking up everyday and "participating" in the present time. Do the things you have to do to progess day to day. The best way to start is by waking up! Try to avoid the mistakes you may have made in the past. You don't want to get rid of it(past), because we all have stored knowledge of our mistakes and how we made them.

None of us forget the past. It's the past that makes us who we are today.
Get to a bookstore and grab yourself a daily meditation book. Under each date you will find a message of positive inspiration that you can read first thing in the morning to start your day.
Keep an open mind and try not to dwell on the past.
Have some faith in yourself. If you don't do this for yourself, remember that no one else can do it for you.
Exercise may help too. Having and keeping a positive attitude and outlook takes practice. It's definetely not done overnight so don't look for a quick fix.
The glass is half full, not half empty.

I agree with Doodlebug. You need to start thinking positively about everything. I know this may sound impossible, but it is something I have done ever since I was diagnosed with a mental illness. Start with little things first like if you accidentally spill something on your bench - don't go off your nutter (negative), instead think oh well the bench needed a good clean anyway (positive).

Learn from your mistakes or bad experiences and believe that things happen for a reason - to make you stronger, positive.
Yes I did say I have a mental illness and the only people who know are the people I tell.

First if one has been soaked in the bad past memories and unhealthy lifestyle, better check physical/mental health through a professional. When one's sure of regaining health, start once again facing the life chellenges. Our brain is like muscles, if you train it to think positive, one day it will be working like automatically bringing good results. It takes time and effort but sure it will lead you to a better life.

Its hard sometimes to give up the past. We have regrets , especially as we get older, and we want to change things or events that we cannot now. So we have to start to realize this , accept it and move on. It can be difficult to do. I myself have a hard time letting go due to regrets, but everday now I tell myself.
"Today could be my last day here on earth, and whatever happened ten years ago is over, whatever happened yesterday is over". Live day to day over and over. It takes mind training, but can be done. No use trying to change the things we cannot, only look forward to each and every day we breathe...
Good luck

You cna never "forget" the past. But you can learn from it and accept it for what it is. The past is over...nothing you can do about that!! the only time is now!!
