First, because Jesus commands you to: "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit," (Matt. 28:19). Also, Ezek. 3:11 says, "and go to the exiles, to the sons of your people, and speak to them and tell them, whether they listen or not..."
Second, you must witness because you love the unsaved
Third, witness because it is a wise thing to do. Prov. 11:30 says, "...he who is wise wins souls."
Fourth, witness to keep people out of hell. Hell is a terrifying place of utter anguish and eternal separation from God. Those who are not saved go there. Witnessing is an attempt to keep them out of hell.
Fifth, witness because it pleases God and brings glory to His name.
And finally, witness so they may find the love and fellowship of God (1 John 1:3), the greatest of all treasures. I can think of no greater gift than salvation. It frees the sinner from sin, it delivers the lost from damnation, and it reveals the true and living God to those who don't know Him.

A fine activity Christians perform as part of their worship! It is embodied in the clear command: “Go therefore and make disciples of people of all the nations, baptizing them, teaching them to observe all the things I have commanded you. And, look! I am with you all the days until the conclusion of the system of things.” (Matthew 28:19, 20) It was Jesus Christ himself who gave to his disciples the commission to carry out that worldwide teaching work.
Since the disciple-making commission was one of the last statements Jesus made to his first disciples before ascending to heaven, was it not a most important assignment? Yes, because fulfilling it would save lives. (1 Timothy 4:16) That makes it a fine work. It provides sound Bible education for those heeding the Kingdom message, and the preaching work puts on notice any unresponsive ones. (Luke 10:10, 11) Their doing this work identifies true Christians as much as does their compliance with any other teachings of Jesus.
Jesus set a superb example for his followers. He taught publicly and made disciples by “preaching the good news of the kingdom.” In imitation of him, new followers themselves became disciple makers, for a true disciple is “one who accepts and assists in spreading the doctrines of another.”
Jesus expected witnessing activity to occupy Christians intensely until the end of the present system of things. This is shown in what he predicted about the Christian ministry and the territory it would cover. Jesus said: “This good news of the kingdom will be preached in all the inhabited earth for a witness to all the nations; and then the end will come.”

To witness about something, is to testify to someone by word or deed. People witness because they want to express what they have learned about God to others. Yes, God is the one who calls us to him, but we must do more than just listen and believe. "Faith with out works is dead", says the bible at James 2: 26. It is a command from Jesus to go preach the kingdom to others. Think of it this way. If you know how to do CPR, and you see someone choking, and then fall down and pass out. Would you just stand there and watch them die? Or would you do what you were trained to do, save a life? Even though you don't know the person, you would not hesitate. Similarly people today who know the word of God, through study of it, want to share what they know with others. Even though they are not sure, that the person will listen or not, they don't hesitate. Because they want to help save a life. They want to also follow Jesus example, he witnessed about his father when he was on earth. Though later he was killed for his beliefs, he never let up before that. And because of his endurance, works, and faithfulness, we all have a chance to be saved. Just think, at least there is still some good out there, people who truly care about our welfare, and just want to help, if we want it.
