Why have different years for dogs and humans?

Some dog breeds live a bit longer than others, and some are susceptible genetically to issues that can unduly shorten quality of life.. but as a rule of thumb (or paw) take the period of pre-adult dog for your breed and call that his/her first sixteen years. That could be as little as the first year for small breeds. Then add the balance of its calender years multiplied by seven. When you make the adolescence adjustment, it makes sense, if you don't, the age comparison is relatively distorted. My dog is ten sidereal (times round the sun) years.. he sexually matured at about two of those.. so that's ((10-2) * 7) +16 or about 72 years... fit, healthy and 'runs' 4-8km every day and then some.
