Because it takes about 18 years for the average human to reach physical maturity and a further 5 to reach adult emotional maturity as the brain is still developing.
In contrast it takes around 1 year for a dog to reach physical maturity and another year to reach mental maturity.
They simply age more quickly that humans which means that their total life span is shorter. Humans live up to 70 on average whereas dogs live for about 10 years on average. Thats where the overall human 7 years per 1 dog year rule comes from.

The age thing is purely a cosmetic 'coping' response humans have to assist negate the inevitable.... As much as we love them, 100% of dogs die. Some dog breeds live a bit longer than others, and some are susceptible genetically to issues that can unduly shorten quality of life.. but as a rule of thumb (or paw) take the period of pre-adult dog for your breed and call that his/her first sixteen years. That could be as little as the first year for small breeds. Then add the balance of its calender years multiplied by seven. When you make the adolescence adjustment, it makes sense, if you don't, the age comparison is relatively distorted. My dog is ten sidereal (times round the sun) years.. he sexually matured at about two of those.. so that's ((10-2) * 7) +16 or about 72 years... fit, healthy and 'runs' 4-8km every day and then some.

I recall a preface to an old book by a scientist writing about his dog(s), it may have been Mendelev or Pavlov. I paraphrase but it went something like... Do you know why a human lives 70 years and a dog 10?

So a master can have many dogs and, a dog only one master!

Understanding this wisdom makes saying goodbye to a good dog just so much easier.

Cause dogs grow and age more rapidly than we do so thats why they give the ratio of 7 human years to 1 dog year. Since most dogs live to be 11 or 12 thats close to our life expectancy of 80 years

Think of it this way... if a human lives for and average of 70 years, and a dog lives for an average of 10 years, 1 year of a dogs life ages them 7 times faster! So people refer to them as dog years.

Well its simple dogs age alot faster than humans so i 20 year old dog is really 140 years old

So if you made their years the same as ours that avg dog would die between 15 and 20 years

Do you mean why do people say "oh yeah my dog is 12 months old but he is seven in human years"
People say this because a dog's life span is shorter than ours so when a year for us passes by it's like the dog has had seven years go by because they age at a much quicker rate than us.

honestly, i think of the vets have replaced it. Now that's like this: canines life twelve months a million = 10.5 Years old in Human life (meaning, whilst a canines is a million, they're already in 5th grade) canines life twelve months 2 = 21 Years old in Human life (all the 1st 2 years are 10.5 each) canines life twelve months 3+ = 4 Years in Human life (each twelve months after 2 years equals 4; save including 4 each twelve months) yet differently to assert that's: the 1st 2 years are 10.5 each, and each twelve months after is 4. So a canines that's 5, could be 10.5+ 10.5+ 4 + 4 + 4 = 33. Vets did this via fact the age you return up with suits the canines adulthood and component of life lots greater effective than the 7 twelve months rule, which basically matched the lifeSPAN. this gadget suits the canines's toddler years, puberty, reproduction, mid-life, senior years and lifespan, so all of us know what is going on lots greater effective. whilst your canines is two, that's a youthful grownup waiting to reproduce and be a youthful self sufficient grownup. it extremely is no longer 14, like the old approach could point out. yet whilst your canines is 10, that's fifty 3 no longer 70!!! like the old approach could have you ever suspect! See what I propose? the recent formula is lots greater precise to describe the actual age of your canines and how they're maturing interior their bodies.

because a dog's body ages at a faster rate than humans. so when they say that one human year equals seven dogs years is really that in one calendar year, the dog's body ages at a rate equivalent to what a humans body ages in seven years. That's why humans live longer than dogs. Our bodies age at a slower rate.
