That's the gist of what Jesus was saying here.
Matthew 7:5 You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother's eye.

THE CLOSET IS A VERY IMPORTANT PLACE FOR BELIEVERS
Matt.6:6 But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly. Matt.6:7 But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking. Matt.6:8 Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him. Matt.6:9 After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Matt.6:10 Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Matt.6:11 Give us this day our daily bread. Matt.6:12 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. Matt.6:13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
Matt.12:36 All must give an account for ever idle word, our words are to do the Lord justice and therby do us justice as well.

The Bible says to take out the beam in our eye first than remove the splinter in our brother's. ( Old Testament )

Christians can't clean out their closet. What is done is done.
Okay...Give me all the thumbs down you want...But let me elaborate. I'm not saying on an individual basis you cannot atone for your sins and the sins of your past. I am saying that Christianity as a whole cannot cleanse itself of the horrible atrocities that have been done in the name of Christianity. You can't erase the past of your religion.
