Step1 - Open file (photo) you want to convert to black&white in PS
Step2 - In PS click Image then Mode and finaly check Grayscale and that's it.
You can also use filters but this is much faster and less dificult

Most digital photoshop/photopaint programs have a "desaturate" filter. This will remove the colors and leave only a black and white image.
After that I would suggest adjust the histogram, widening the spread between Max black and Max white. This will sharpen it up and make it more pleasing. Don't over do it, you still want it to look natural.

Go to IMAGE > ADJUSTMENTS > CHANNEL MIXER Change RED to 50%, GREEN to 25% and BLUE to 25% then check the MONOCHROME box at the bottom. This will give you a better image to edit in photoshop than turning it into grey scale or de-saturating it!

Don't just change it to grayscale - it'll look flat. Anytime you change something to B&W, you need to adjust the contrast (using Curves is the best way, but there are several ways to adjust it).
Go to Image - Adjustments - Desaturate.
Then go to Image - Adjustments - Brightness/Contrast
Bump up the contrast until you have BLACK blacks and WHITE whites.
