I am a bartender at a sports club and when we finish off a bottle the last shot (which is less than a shot) is refered to as a "spider". A "spider" is always on the house. Where did this term come from and why? And I suppose I should also ask has anyone else ever heard of this?

yes i have heard of it, it is an old saying, i have heard it referred to as a spider leg also, so i'm assuming that , since it is a smaller amt they are referring to it as the size of a spiders leg-which it's not of course, but then since it's a very old saying, i'll bet that in the olden days it was a smaller amt. than we call a spider today.
