You can buy anti chew sprays at the store but a good way is to keep a close eye on all his movements and whenever he chews something you dont want him to scold him and then give him the proper chew toy. Ive been dealing with dogs for the last 15 years and I find the best way to break the habit is when your dog is a pup keep him on his leash at all times in or out of the house this way he has no oppurtunity to misbehave. And when he is off his leash always be there to supervise him. Think of it as a child, would you let a 2 year old outta your sight? No because they can get into things that can harm them so treat the pup the same way. Good luck.

Hi I have a choc lab - I have had 2 before him and they all wanted to chew things but this one wasn't so bad because I was at home to keep him company and occupied.

All the suggestions about toys etc are good but don't smack him for chewing things, just make sure he has plenty to do if you have to leave him and be sure to put away anything like shoes etc where he can't get at them. He doesn't know the difference between them and toys!

I used to roll up old pairs of socks into a tight ball which he loved to chew and since labs have a wonderful sense of smell, if you put a small biscuit treat in the middle it will spend ages trying to chew the sock to get hold of it. These sock balls are also great for throwing to a pup in the house where you don't want to break anything.

Lastly, alternate the toys you give him so that each day he has a different one to keep him interested in it.

It does pass!!

You don't stop the pup from chewing. You just need to redirect him to something that is ok to chew. You may have to try a few different thing, like a squeaky toy, a big bone, or a kong toy... if you want to prevent him from chewing on certain things, try a bitter spray on that item. They are non toxic, they jut don't taste good.

All pups need to chew. The best way to stop him from chewing things you don't want him to chew is to remove them from where he can reach them and give him chewy toys to keep him occupied. If he is chewing things you can't remove like a table etc, put something nasty tasting on it to deter him and make sure that you have something different for him to chew.
As he gets older he will need to chew less but its good to keep the habit up because it will keep his teeth clean and healthy and avoid dental problems in the future.

My lab pups will chew when bored. Dog toys (not shoes or slippers) are a good pacifier.

Be careful what you give your pup. Don't give it anything that could splinter or break as this will possibly choke or harm your dog.

They all grow out of it by the age of 2.

A firm 'tap' on the nose and a strong "No" will help.

Good advice for the product 'bitter end'. I would give that a go too.

I assume you mean 'labrador' and by chewing I assume you don't mean that you want to stop him chewing his food? What is he chewing , when is he chewing? How old is it?How long is it being left?
Please be more specific in your question in order to get proper replies.
If the dog is around 4 months old, he will be teething and NEEDS to chew to get rid of baby teeth. Your labrador book will tell you that. You DID buy a book to tell you how to look after him properly didn't you?????
If he is teething, you need to provide him with things he is allowed to chew. Buy a large roasted bone from the pet shop, or a large rubber kong toy or rope toy. If he is chewing because he is being left alone all day long then rehome him. People should not have dogs and expect them to be left alone all day long it is cruel and unnatural.

From chewing furniture? Puppies need to chew so make sure the puppy has good chewing toys around. If that does not work try a furniture spray like bitter apple, they have things like that in pet stores.

One, it is teething and needs a bone to chew on. Two the best thing to do is to wrap aluminum foil around what ever it is chewing on. Dogs hate the taste and the way it feels on there teeth and gums. The foil will not hurt the dog if it doesn't swallow alot. so make sure you watch for this. If it dose swallow a small amount it is okay because it should pass through with no problem.

Training. When you catch him chewing say "dog's name, No." When he stops -- which should be immediate Praise! "dog's name, good dog (boy, girl). Be lavish in your praise, then divert his/her attention with an acceptable chew toy or some other distraction. Labs and Goldens are very intelligent, shouldn't take too long for him to catch on.

You can also use the correctional time for other training as well. Catch him chewing, call him to you, praise. Give the sit command, praise. Have him heel with you around the house, praise. Multitasking, beautiful. good luck

You can buy this stuff called Bitter Apple or Bitter End from the pet store that tastes horrible to dogs. When you see him chewing something he is not supposed to, immediately discipline him (literally as he is in the act or he won't know why he's in trouble). Lightly tap/spank his nose, say "NO" firmly, and then put some of the Bitter End on your finger and touch it to his mouth. He won't like the taste of it....then put the Bitter End on things that he has a tendency to chew on and he will leave them alone.
