I know how you feel I get a cold sore every year without fail and they are a right pain in the bum not only are they really painful you feel like you need to wear a bag on your head for a fortnight, I too have tried everything and the only thing that has worked for me is pure T-tree oil in the little bottles from the herbal shop or I get mine from Tesco of all places. I dab a bit on a cotton bud and keep applying as often as I can. It makes them heal alot faster and the next time when they come back they aren't as big. Its a virus that stays dormant in your body until something triggers them either stress or you are bit run down, try taking a vitamin supplement for a while. Good Luck :o)

There is a new product out called compeed cold sore patches. They are made by the same company who make the excellent plasters for blistered feet. The cold sore patches are like a little circular patch you put over the cold sore it helps promote healing. I used to put bonjela on mine and I found it helped! I have to say zovirax is a load of rubbish if you are going to get a cold sore you are going to get one nothing can stop it as its a virus. You tend to get them when your body is run down or from exposure to extreme cold (wind) or heat (the sun) My best advice its use a good lip balm all the time with a sunscreen in it. If you are run down take a muliti vitamin.

Cold sores are caused by the herpes virus. Many of us already have the cold sore virus dormant in our bodies, and never have a flare up of cold sores. We contracted it as children, as it is a very common virus, and children pick it up easily as they often share food and drinks, and may be less concerned about hand washing and hygiene. Cold sores can be transmitted even when the person does not have a cold sore, though it is less likely to happen then.

I had a friend who frequently had cold sores and one day she read an article which said that when you get that first tingling feeling to make a paste of 1teaspoon of instant coffee (she used Nescafe) with a little bit of water and dab it on the area with a cotton bud. It sounded really crazy but she tried it anyway and it worked. You do look a bit odd, like you've suddenly grown a big mole on your face, but she said it was worth it. I've recently recommended this to another friend who tried it and it also worked for her.

I did a little research on this last week becuase my boyfriend gets cold soars under his bottom lip. Lysine drops and supplements (in the vitamin aisle) and Abreva cleared him up. The Lysine is supposed to keep the cold sores from coming back. He was also advised that sun exacerbates cold sores, as does shaving.

The frequency at which you get cold sores is surprising. You should go for a long term anti viral treatment.

Anti-viral medication is prescribed to reduce the severity of the outbreak and the duration of the outbreak. If pain is present, any OTC painkiller may be taken. Warm or cold compresses can be used to ease the pain of the sores
