put two elecrtodes in water. connect a direct current to the electrodes. Hydogene is formed at one elcetrode, Oxygen at the other

Electrolysis as suggested by gjmb1960 is probably the simplest and most direct method. But why would you want to produce hydrogen to run an engine? Two insurmountable snags come to mind:
1. You will use much, much, more energy to produce the hydrogen than you will obtain by running the engine,
2. You will not escape the effect of pollution because the energy you use for hydrogen production will itself be produced by conventional energy systems and will therefore contribute to the 'greenhouse effect'.

You could collect the hydrogen from a chemical reaction that slowly liberates hydrogen.

One example would be a reaction between an acid and a piece of metal. Another example is electrolysis of water.

To get enough to run an engine (I assume it's fully large) it's probably best to use electrolysis. But generating and collecting hydrogen in large quantities is difficult and dangerous (think Hindenberg). It's an investment, so I'd recommend the advice of a professional.

Use electrolysis but add a bit of caustic soda NaOH to the water to improve the efficiency of the process. If you keep topping the water up, eventually it will be enriched for deuterium.

Get some water and take out the oxygen with a really fine membrane seive.

This should confirm that electrolysis is the answer. Although this is for a rotary engine:

You'll probably find the answer on the Internet - but beware the terror police are watching - they might get the wrong idea.

Electrolysis. Don't try at home. Home electrical power and water can kill.
