I would have thought it would be kinder to wean you off them over a period of time, not just stop them cold. You could probably reduce to zero over a period of 3 - 4 months max, you wouldnt be allowed to stay on one reduced dose for "months".
Talk to him about it and tell him you are worried.
The excerpt below is from the web site given which is all about valiun, what it is and what it does. You can see that there is not just a physical dependance, people often get an emotional dependance on it too.
"Valium (diazepam) is habit forming. You can become physically and psychologically dependent on the medication. Do not take more than the prescribed amount of medication or take it for longer than is directed by your doctor. Withdrawal effects may occur if Valium (diazepam) is stopped suddenly after several weeks of continuous use. Your doctor may recommend a gradual reduction in dose."

Certainly, "weening" you off of the Valium would be the best method, however stopping the medication abruptly should have no serious side affects. I am wondering if maybe (and it may not be the case) if your body has developed an addiction to the medication. If this is the case, you need to discuss that with your doctor and find an alternative plan (i.e. decrease in the dose gradually over an extended period of time, NA, or other methods) . Most of the time, however, people who are not addicted suffer no serious side affects from stopping this particular medication abruptly. Good luck

I had developed similar habbits
in 1982.
After a great deal of self determination,
I could leave the drug.
What I did was to adopt a Yogasan
and practice it after every dinner,
which induced me to sleep, without
taking the Drug- Diazepham.
It has many names: Valium, Calmpose
etc.
You can get in touch with me and
take my help to overcome the crisis.
I wish you donot get addicted to it.

That is a very high dose. Its understandable that your doctor wants you to stop taking the tablets. You would be really adicted to them by now. Sometimes "weaning" is not effective as you would be tempted to take an extra one.
I know that it seems too hard to stop taking the tablets "all at once" but you would probably be back to normal in about 1 -2
weeks. It really is worth doing it that way even if it is uncomfortable.

Ask your pharmacist. Pharmacists know about drugs and their actions and consequenses. Then talk to your doctor again. It seems like you should be tapered off, but I'm not a professional.
