In the past 4 months I have dyed my hair using Semi-Permanent box dyes. I think I am sure of the color I want to be, and want to use a permanent dye now. Problem is, I am a light brown with lots of warm reddish tones...and the color I want is more of a light reddish/coppery color. So I would be going lighter. Is it safe to use a box dye? Or should I just go to the salon? And how long should I wait if I just dyed it with Semi-Permanent 2 days ago?

I would go to a salon; specifically someone who specializes in coloring. Going lighter is best done by a professional.

Well, if you have had the results that you like in a semi-permanent color, chances are that you will have the same results with the permanent. I use permanent color in my hair from the box all the time. Alot of times I change the brand or the shade that I use, so I am not always sure of how the color will come out. But I am very flexible that way. I've not had any "bad" results, just different shades. However, I always go darker and have never lightened my hair at home. I would suggest if you are going to go much lighter - go to a salon. To go lighter you must strip the color from your hair first and then put on the color that you want. This is a bit trickier than just coloring it. But, again, if you have had the color you want from a box in temp coloring - there is no reason why permanent wouldn't do the same thing. There isn't too much difference between them, I don't think. Good luck.

heys ..how are you? honestly to me and professionally dying your hair with box/home hair dye will eventually start to kill the root of your hair yes it's true I've only done box dye a couple of times and I will Never do it agian honestly my best advice would be to go to a salon and get a master hair stylist to do your hair some low-lights might work if you want a lighter color I would suggest Not Dying your hair agian with box dye and wait at least 3 weeks to a month to let your hair rest and give it time to recoop from dying it ...it's like if I where to go to a salon and they messed up on color you can either do it right away or wait a month but I would suggest waiting though ...I've been dying my hair for the past 5 yrs now I dyed it blonde for 4 yrs mind you it was a 10 gold that's very golden blonde and I have light to dark brown hair natuarlly but just recently I've went back to brown bc my husband and I are trying to get pregnant at the moment when he gets home from Baghdad, Iraq so in saying that getting to the color you want can take a few trys but please if you love yourself and your hair go to a salon to have it done box dye will kill your roots and make your hair stop growing lol ...hope this helps Love Kels xoxo

Sinc you just dyed your hair, wait 7 days, this wait is for anything that you do to your hair that is a chemical - dye or straightening.

I would recommend going to a salon first so that you can get the look/color you want, and then you can do touch-ups and roots at home after. At a salon they can nuetralize the colors for you, rather than you doing it at home and getting a surprise.
