I want to head to the city but my funds are limited. I know I shouldn't go but I enjoy walking around. Any ideas on how to make a day really cheap yet enjoyable?

Do not take Metro.
It is expensive. You can walk in Manhattan.
Go to China town to find something to eat.

There's a ton to see just walking around the city. You could check out Central Park, Times Square, Rockefeller Center... There are some museums that are always free and some that are free during certain days and times. An unlimited Metro Pass is $7 for the day which isn't bad and it's a lot cheaper then a cab. Gray's Papaya has good hotdogs and they are really cheap. You can get a hotdog and a drink for a couple of bucks. They have several locations throughout the city.

Walking is one of the best things to do in New York anyway. One of my favorite walks was always across the Brooklyn Bridge. I think it's best to start from the Brooklyn side. Take the F train to the first stop in Brooklyn, get off and walk back across the bridge. It's one of the most beautiful views in the world, the bridge itself is beautiful, and has an interesting historical marker in the middle, plus you'll get exercise and can people-watch. Another good free thing is to walk south from the Manhattan side of the bridge - Down near the southern tip of Manhattan is the National Museum of the American Indian, which is a very cool museum in a beautiful old building, and it's free. They have a donation box and I normally would contribute something, but occasionally I just had virtually no cash, and didn't. Nobody hassled me about it. They don't take money at the admissions desk, it's just a donation box. Then you can walk north, take the subway north or do whatever, just people-watching. If you walk north on Broadway you can go browse for used books at The Strand Bookstore, 12th and Broadway. It's my recollection that The Village Voice used to list some free events. I wouldn't make a big deal about where to eat if you truly have very little money -- subsist on coffee or whatever -- but if you have enough that you want to go get a good and fun, inexpensive meal, I would go to the website chowhound.com and search for any kind of ethnic food that interests you - maybe in Manhattan but especially in Queens. I've had some really good inexpensive Indian food near the Museum of the Moving Image in Queens and cannot recall the name of the restaurant, but tons of interesting-looking restaurants are in that area (museum is at 35 Ave and 36 Street in Queens and restaurants are nearby).

New York City is a real good place to walk around and enjoy the
sights and sounds of the city and take the Metro for $7 dollars a day. Central Park is beautiful and lots of vendors selling food and drinks. Enjoy your visit!!

Then if u like to walk, NYC is the place for you. I would say to go down to the Village. Check out Washington Square Park (where 5th Av starts) then walk east on 8th st to Tompkins Square. East 8th turns into St Marks Place, which is my favorite street in the East Vill. Jane St, Horatio St, Abingdon Square, all nice. Jane St, is in my opinion the prettiest Street in all of Manhattan. Though I prefer the WEst Village personally for walking around. Eat Sabretts hot dogs, and dont let yourself get bothered by the panhandlers. I reccomend flat out ignoring them, especially the more agressive of them. I, as a rule, only would give a few coins to the ones that were doing something, like playing an instrument. Ones that just asked for money got nothing. NYC is the best place you could choose to explore. Have fun!

Hmm you could take a long walk exploring the city life and maybe you could stop at some vendors for some snacks.

Would have been easier if you could have stated the range you can spend.

In terms of food: Eat at chicken and rice on 53rd and 6th. Delicious, hearty and affordable. It's a vendor and it opens at 7:30 PM.
