That is indeed true. Up to two glasses of red wine or two pints of beer per day is good for the heart (and soul) There is a HUGE amount of bad publicity about alcohol about at the moment. I suspect the "moral majority" have a new crusade.

It is believed that wine has a health benefit, particularly red wine and this has largely been supported by the supposed "French paradox" which is where the French people consume a lot of fatty foods high cream etc. and lots of wine, and miraculously have a moderate percentage of obesity in the population. However, none of it is proven, and there are many other reasons that the French people are so healthy despite a high fat diet (for example the quality of their produce and not all fats are bad fats remember!) As for the wine, the only thing that has been scientifically proven is that red wine does contain a lot of antioxidants (which themselves have only been proven benefical theoretically, not in vivo) and that people that consume moderate amounts of alcohol generally lead a happier life and therefore live longer.
As for liver problems, alcohol is a toxin, your liver is designed to clean up toxins. For persons that have no liver disfunctionality, it is advised that 2-3 standard drinks per day is an acceptable level of drinking. This does not mean "take an average". Binge drinking places enourmous strain on the liver. It is only temporary and the liver can fix itself, however this doesn;t mean you can binge all the time. The scientific answer is that all toxins that your liver encounters have the potential of doing small amounts of damage to the liver itself and that most of this damage is reversible. Alcohol isn't the only toxin your body has to deal with, you wouldnt breathe if you couldnt take any toxins. In moderation drinking is fine.
Hope this helps!

There have been numerous medical studies that indicate that moderate use of alcohol may thin the blood (preventing arteriosclerosis and some types of dementia). However alcohol should be avoided altogether by pregnant women to prevent fetal alcohol syndrome. One or two drinks occasionally will not harm you. Never consume alcohol if taking any medications.

i knew of a man who was drunk and fell off of a cliff. onto the ground. it wasn't that high but high enough to kill you. he would have died of shock if it weren't for the alcohol that relaxed him. he survived and was released from the hospital six weeks later.
ALSO, DRINKING IS PERFECTLY FINE WITH MODERATION
PEOPLE HAVE BEEN DRINKING FOR THOUSANDS OF YEARS!
