Tell them you will be responsible for the dog! Cleaning up poopie taking it for at least 45 min walks every day! And depending on how old you are offer to get a job to help with expenses! Dogs are very expensive just like children! They need food water leashes collars tags regular shots any vet visits that may be needed not to mention trips with the dog beds and treats! And do some serious research on breeds and their temperaments! A dog is a huge responsibility you are caring for another life! Lets your parents know you are aware of that! Also look at your living situation.... do you live in an Apt? House with a large yard? small yard? a farm? what kind of energy can you handle! Don't just go for the cutest face you see! Trust me do your research any dog you choose will be eternally grateful to you for choosing them or even better rescuing them!

First off you can't MAKE your parents do anything.

Second, you have to realize that puppies are a LOT of work and educate yourself on what will be expected of you as a puppy parent. It really is like having a new baby, you have to constantly watch what they are doing, chewing on, etc. You have to commit to training your puppy the right way because doing it with fear (as in hitting, yelling, etc...) just make a situation worse.

Puppies are adorable and sweet, absolutely innocent to everything in this world, you have to have to time to play with your dog, walk him/her, potty train him/her, and so on. It gets frustrating, tiresome, and takes immense patience. Also, puppies grow up and often times owners are not excited about them anymore and this leads to abandonment, mistreatment, or feelings of not being able to deal with it anymore. Know that you are making a commitment to this living being for the next 8-14 years of your life. Not your parents, but you... the one who wants the puppy.

If all this still sounds good, go to purina's website and read what they have to find the best breed suited to your lifestyle. There is a lot of good pet owning info there.

Once you have all that info, and know what your plan is for owning this puppy then go to your parents and make an educated request telling them all you've learned and that you truly understand what it is you're asking.

LAST... there are SO many wonderful dogs, including puppies, that need adopting from shelters. Mixed breeds are often smarter and healthier because they have not been bred for perfection. I have 3 dogs from a shelter, 2 mixed and 1 purebred who happened to have been abandoned. They are fantastic and wonderful members of our family. Your dog needs to be considered a family member and given a lot of love and attention, NOT tied to tree outside or left alone in a yard all the time.

I don't want to be negative, just honest about how important all of these things are.

Worst case scenario, you can ask your parents for something smaller to show them you can handle the responsibility of owning a pet of any kind.

Good luck!

Dogs are a very big responsibility. The can be very expensive at times too. You need to proove to them that you will be able to look after this dog for the next 10-16 years of your life.
You need to be able to pay for all his/her vaccinations, micro-chipping, de-sexing, food for 10-16 years.
You need a collar, leash, bed, toys, food etc.
Go for a walk each day for 30 minutes to proove to them you are willing to walk the dog EVERY single day. If you're old enough, get a job to proove that you will be able to pay for all it's needs.
You MUST do your homework on the breed that would suit you. You can't just get the dog that you WANT. It has to be able to suit you. If you're a non-active dog, you wouldn't get a Dalmatian, Golden Retriever or German Shepherd because they are very active dogs.
If they are going to be paying for this dog, maybe they do not have the money to get it right now.
Wether you want one now or not, you need to wait for a good breeder to come along. You shouldn't just get a cute little puppy out of a pet store. Nor should you buy from a 'backyard breeder' who usually advertises their pups in the newspaper.

do we get 2 points for asking a 4 point question?
Your parents are probably either waiting for you to reach the age where you are a responsible person, or they can't afford a pet at this time, or they don't have the time to take the pet out twice a day and don't want to get tied down to specific times (like early mornings) to take the dog out. They will get you a "dog" in due time.
