It wasn't a religion, it was a way of life. Much of what Moses wrote down in Torah is common sense. But for some strange reason common sense has always been a rare thing. So basically, they lived by the teachings of Torah even before Moses wrote it down. Judaism was created until about 200BCE when the Pharisees started in power.

There was no particular name or organized religion that existed prior to Moses. As far back as Abraham, God intended the Hebrews (as they were called at that time) to go "unto the land that I will show thee." This was Israel or in ancient times called Judea. The religion born out of Exodus and the rest of the Torah involve the laws and traditions that would be seen as Judaism. Jesus, who came along much later was a practicing Jew. "The Last Supper" was actually Jesus conducting a Passover Seder.
It would help to really look into Ancient Jewish History in the Encyclopedia Judaica.

before moses, they did not have a religion, they just had a particular, nongeneralized faith in G-d.
"There are several gods worshipped by the Jews down through the ages. The 'one god' theme of the bible is interesting, but it isn't always the same 'one god' as sometimes it is Yahweh, sometimes El, sometimes the god whose name cannot be spoken."
um, they are all the same... the tetragrammaton (the first one you mentioned) is the true name and it IS the "name which cannot be spoken" which you seem to think is a different name... others are epithets for G-d, they are not true names. El is not a name, it means "Master". Adonai is not a name, it means "my L-rd". i am not sure where you got the idea that different gods must be being referred to just because somebody calls G-d "Master" or "my L-rd" instead of his real name, but its incorrect. my mother's name is miriam, when i call her Mom does that mean i am talking to a different person? there is only one G-d in the bible.

Before Moses, who brought the Egyptian religious practices into the Hebrew faith, Jews worshipped the God of Abram of Ur, whom they called father Abraham.

I don't know which one it is at this point in time, although I think it is the no-name guy since a lot of Jews use 'G-d' instead of 'God' when they write.

People have been around at least 300,000 years before Moses. I'm sure all kinds of wacky religions were devoutly practiced. There are about 10,000 religions extant today.

They still were Jewish, but they didn't have a written rulebook. Before Moses, all of the religious laws and worship traditions were handed down thru oral record-- Daddy told his sons, Mommy told her daughters, and it kept on going down the line. Moses' Law just kinda standardized things...

Before Moses, the Hebrews followed the faith of their Father; Abraham, whom the Lord God called out of the land of the Chaldeans.

i know that that may no longer an instantaneous answer to your question, yet I merely might desire to advise a e book that I study those days, "The twelve months of living Biblically" by way of A.J. Jacobs. it extremely is the tale of a guy raised in a "secular Jewish kinfolk" who comes to a decision to obey the Bible as actually as obtainable for one twelve months. that's humorous, serious, religious and almost actual life. It grew to become right into a brand long island cases bestseller. It have been given spectacular comments from materials as diverse as "Books & custom: A Christian overview" and "Jewish e book worldwide". additionally, i'm extremely no professional, yet I honestly have continually believed that Judaism has 2 components. One is obviously religious, however the different is background. you have a Jewish background, you do no longer unavoidably might desire to prepare the religious component. stable success on your seek!
