Here is the background to the question: I DON'T CARE IF YOU SHOW RESPECT FOR MY RELIGIOUS PERSPECTIVES.

Here then is the question:

Why should I show any respect at all to your religious perspectives if I find them absurd?

Note that failure to show deference to your perspectives is not the same as failure to respect YOU as a person, or your rights to believe whatever you do. It simply means that I laugh at the absurdity of your position and mock it publicly. Why shouldn't I do that?

What's happening isn't so much that they want respect as that they want privilege. They want to be treated better than you because they consider themselves to be better than you.

Respect is earned, not given. No matter what the issue, there's always gonna be someone to mock all sides' opinions. And that's truly what makes for some really great comedic moments! Tolerance doesn't exist on any real level. Having to be politically correct is the only reason why there is the illusion of tolerance. If people could truly speak their minds, we'd find that everyone is, to some extent, anti-religion (cause the one they do or don't practice is the "right" religion) etc. There's no reason to respect anyone elses religious perspectives because in the end, they won't respect yours either, unless, of course, the two of you completely agree on the same religion.

What is religion? Just a defence mechanism to safe guard the adherents to it. And then that mechism truns to dogma and blind faith, some of it as you so rightly pointed out absurd.
And there is no religion that does not have some absurdity or the other - the Bible - the parting of the Ocean, the reserruction of Jesus, the Koran - 72 houris or whatever for the terrorists , Hinduism-read the mythology.
And if you find these perspectives of mine absurd, well you are free to do so, I don't care.

I think a lot of people cannot separate individuals from the labels they hold be they religious or else. So they take it as a personal hit when the religion or the belief is in their eyes insulted. That is one of the dangers of using labels.. they get to be an integrated part of the person rather than the person being a part of them.

People already do this (usually due to misinformation spread about religion so what they actual mock isn't actually what I believe at all so it's hard to take offense at people mocking and making fun of a religion that doesn't really exist except in the minds of the misinformed people who are making fun of it).

So I really don't care. If, however, you take the time to unmisinform yourself and then properly mock the religion that I practice then I wouldn't take offense at all.....in fact I'd give you kudos (because you did what a lot of other people fail to do at all and that is take the time to actually learn about it). In fact, since you now know what the religion actually teaches, I'd probably join you in the jokes (because afterall we all need a good laugh at ourselves sometimes).

Until then, so long as people think I worship cows, believe in millions of gods, think I'm stupid enough to believe a statue or picture is a divine being, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc...then why should I bother...that's not my religion, that's not what I believe. In my eyes these people look like fools and I laugh at their mockery they make of their own selves for not educating themselves (besides they never get the jokes I could tell them because they don't know or bother to understand the religion I practice).

It depends on how you are defining absurd. Are you talking about a logical impossibility or something that does not fit within your definitions of possible?

Perhaps something you consider impossible actually is possible and actually did happen. Perhaps there are things in this universe you know nothing about.

Logical impossibilities are truly absurd... perhaps if I had an example of what you consider absurd, I could answer better...

OK, I'll play the sacrificial lamb and be the first to answer so that someone else can get the 10 points.

Now all we need are 4 more generous studs such as myself to give up their 10 points for the rest of humanity and you'll get a serious answer.

The answer is simple, you don't have to respect my religious perspectives if you find them absurd. But if you show no respect for any one else's views, you can hardly expect them to respect yours, can you?

Hummm?..Well from my personal perspective, I appreciate that you respect me as a person, and that you concider my rights to believe as I feel inclined to believe. As it is also YOUR right to laugh & mock at the beliefs that I hold dear. However, you should concider that IF what I hold to be truth, really IS truth...the future your concidering for eternity may be one that you should whole-heartedly re-concider. The TRUTH is out there!

WELL FOR ONE SHOWING RESPECT IS THE RIGHT THING TO DO IF YOU ARE A CHRISTIAN. BECAUSE IT DOESN'T MATTER WHAT RELIGION WE PRACTICE IF IT IS TRULY THE WAY WE BELIEVE. BUT AS THE BIBLE SAYS GOD CREATED US ALL EQUAL. ONE IS NO BETTER THAN THE OTHER, AND WHEN IT COMES TIME TO STAND BEFORE GOD ON JUDGEMENT DAY IT WON'T MATTER WHAT RELIGION WE PRACTICE, IT ONLY MATTERS WHAT GOD THINKS. I DON'T TRY AND PUSH MY RELIGION ON ANYONE, AND I THINK OUT OF RESPECT NO ONE SHOULD DO THAT. WHO'S TO SAY WHO'S RIGHT OR WRONG IN THEIR BELIETHS

I don't think you are the one to talk about respect, after your previous question.

Oh, and I'm number 11. Do I get to be heard? Forget about the points. It seems rather stupid to be thinking about THAT. That's not the purpose of this site...
