Yudhisthira could not make himself tell an entire lie, despite the fact that if Drona continued to fight, the Pandavas and the cause of dharma itself would have lost. When he spoke his half-lie, Yudhisthira's feet and chariot descended to the ground momentarily.[citation needed] However, the ruse worked. Drona was disheartened, and laid down his weapons. He was then killed by Dhristadyumna.

Only lie Yudhishthhir said in life time was at the Battlefields about the death of Aswathama. It goes as follows-
Aswathama hathaha kunjaraha:
Lord Krishna sided always Pandavas as they believed him completely. But now and then they got some doubts about Krishna’s power or strength. In the battle field ,it was the turn of Dronacharya to fight against the pandavas. he was using all the powerful astras .The panadavas could not withstand against their acharya .Lord Krishna asked Bhima to come near him and told bhima to leave the battle field and go home and bring one newly born elephant .also the name to be given to the elephant as Aswathama by pandits while chanting mantras. Bhima left the field reluctantly and did as per Krishna’s word. As per the laws of battle, once a person enters the field, he should return home after the time for that day is over. Lord Krishna asked Bhima to kill the elephant named aswthama and the people around beat the drums and blown trumpets. the sounds that aswathama was dead reached Dronacharya. He enquired Dharmaraja whether the news was correct. then Yudhister told “Aswathama hathah kunjaraha". Dronacharya had so much love towards his son that he could not bear the sad news and lost his life my prayopavesa Lord Krishna did all the karmas as per dharma, never violated the Dharma. in all the dasaavatharas the scripture say boldly that Lord Krishna is paramatma. pray him. leave your heart at the lotus feet of lord.. sing the glory of lord Krishna. He loved all pranis.

"Ashwatthaamaa died"
By the way, I have been greatly enjoying your questions lately. I have long been fascinated by Hindu religion and writings but I don't have the memory to keep the characters straight. I like these little mini lessons.
