The talking in an Asian language is not race discrimination. That's probably their first language and the one that they know the best. They might be ignoring your niece because they don't want to offend by mistake. I used to live in Huntsville, Alabama.
Just so you know where I'm coming from, I'm a racist. I don't make excuses for the bad behavior of non-Whites, as seems to be the fashion nowadays. I just don't think that those Asians' behavior was intentionally bad. My opinion is that your niece should not mix with Asians, but find employment somewhere Whiter.

She probably shouldn't take it personally. People tend to gravitate towards people like themselves. It's human nature. I doubt very seriously they are trying to discriminate against her (otherwise she probably wouldn't have gotten the job). Furthermore, there is nothing wrong with them speaking their native language. Maybe they don't speak English well or want to practice they're own language.
However, if you're niece is bothered by it, she should politely mention that she feels excluded and that it is rude to speak in another language around someone you work with or know who doesn't speak that language. Despite what Racist McRaciston up there said, you should try not to encourage a xenophobic reaction.

Nice one, David S...for someone who admits to being racist, you sure deliver a fine defence. Lived in Spain for three years, and at first was vexed at most of my English friends reverting back to the language, despite them knowing more than enough of Spanish - then it came to me...learning at university (or even via certain tapes) may seem good, but we have to be either amongst Spanish - or in Spain to sharpen up and understand the twists and turns of the language.
The same could be said of the Arab language and the various shoot-offs...the only people from the East who will not speak any other language than Hindi/Urdu are the elders. Where have we heard that before (but about the English)? Most of the younger Asians have taken their lessons in time gone by, but as you rightly say...their shyness might be due to them suspecting they might unconsciously offend - and as it is now, most of us dear Brits, thanks to our press have become e-x-t-r-e-m-e-l-y sensitive concerning Asians, Muslims and mode of dress.

>>"they ignore her and talk in their mother tongue between themselves. is this not race discrimination. if the boot was on the other foot it would make national headlines! "<<
umm, you do realize that "the other way around" is how it normally IS, right?
I mean a workplace having almost entirely one race, and having one(or a very few) who don't speak that language, being left out...
or hopefully this is satirical and you already know that....

i imagine it will be seen as a similar element (both as undesirable). yet human beings in u . s . a . of america are quick to call one yet another racists because thats what the media says. Black human beings in themselves have bread racism in this united states ever when you consider that they received their god given freedom by technique of declaring ****** and cracker and such. Now at the same time as human beings say black guy they listen ****** and are quick to bounce on their *** and tell them they are incorrect for describing someone, those anybody is in a number of of situations black themselves! in my opinion i imagine it shouldn't count number and those anybody is making it count number it is faulty. I advise if the man isn't using it in hate shouldn't or not this is advantageous? i'm no longer racist even notwithstanding i dislike maximum African individuals (no longer blacks; African individuals) by using way they act by technique of definition; like a ******; lazy, no solid, cruel, unjust, vulgar (no longer because the coloration of their pores and skin). i'm sorry if i rambled on slightly yet age discrimination and race discrimination in my opinion are in truth a similar element reckoning on how they are used.

To say that this is race discrimination is a bit extreme. it's natural for people who share a common language to use it.... I hope that they use English when speaking to clients though!
