Well, among a great many historical reasons, making school mandatory is one way of keeping things fair and on a level playing field. That's to say that a government entity not offering some form of education for everybody could and has easily degraded into situations where only the rich get to go while the poor cannot. It's a bit of couterintuition, but forcing this via law partially relinquishes governments from being accused of prejudicial acts while making certain that even if you never want to go, a person who does want to can sans interruption by your comparative distaste for formalized education entering into the argument against her/him. Now if we could only eliminate the actual, lingering prejudices from the school systems themselves, we'd be on a brighter track.

It's the law because kids won't make the decision on their own to go to school. If I had the chance of dropping out 20 years ago, I probably would have done it - hey, stay home and play instead! 20 years later, I made the choice to stay in school (2 years of grad school to go ...). But now I'm mature enough to decide that. We know it's good for kids to go to school - they learn to read and write and (hopefully) balance their checkbooks, it keeps them off the streets, and someday they'll get a better, higher-paying job because they have an education.

School is a place where you learn the wisedom from other people. We all want our kids to be educated, smarter and knowledgeable. That's why we want them to go to school. At young age, kids does not realize the benefit and necesarity of educations. Just like kids does not know what food is good for their health. At young age, they don't even learn and know enought to rationalize the importance of knowledge and educations, so we will do it in a way that make sure they attend school.

Because if children don't go to school, they grow up to be uneducated asswipes who are a drain on society. Have you ever spoken to an uneducated adult? The ignorance is quite apparent in most of them.
