If this is his first apartment or house, some traditional gifts could be good. You can put them in a basket and make it festive.
Bread so he will never go hungry.
Wine so his life is always sweet (you can get non-alcoholic wine since he is under age)
Salt so his life will always have spice
a Candle so he will always have something to light his way.
A broom (preferably an artisan, hand-tied one) is also a traditional gift.
If these don't appeal to you, google "housewarming gifts" and you will find a lot of suggestions.

A nice bottle of wine or spirits, like vodka or scotch
(depending on what he drinks)
It doesn't really matter if he already has a bottle of it because alcohol last for ages and will be drank eventually anyway.
It's also good because you can control the cost depending on how much you want to spend because there is a huge variety on the market...

A neat looking coffee table book labeled with something like "My visit to Tim's Place", a neat looking pen assortment, like a vase with pens( taped up to the top w/flowers sticking out lookin' like a vase of flowers, ya know?) or maybe for a guy, beer bottle w/corks on top? for his friends to write something in it when they visit, he will cherish it in years to come. I did that for my daughter when she moved out & some of her friends have since passed away or moved away & it gives her reflection of (as she so delicately put it) "That first year at the crap shack! " and she is amazed that her friends never wrote anything about her dinky 3 room apt.w/a closet sized bathroom, etc...Just how neat things were, or how she was a mess when she had the flu & 3 of her friends dtayed there to take care of her, etc.. Good luck hon...let me know if you like the idea, maybe we'll start a trend!
