Some people do need to read it through for sure, you cant pick and choose your own personal "biblical religion".

I am not a religious man; I mean that I don't believe in religions, though I believe in powers greater than me that created our universe and maybe other universes (not a man with a beard). I have read through the Bible from beginning to end many times, as well as Asimov's books on the secular versions of the old and new testaments. I find comfort and perspective in the Bible and may have a general understanding of it that I find informative. I do not think that most of us lay people can find more than a few personal chapters and verses that we can go to when it is time for reflection. I think that it is the task of a theologian to have a grasp of the bible and all the surrounding religious texts to help us talk and think about our humanity. I like to talk with knowledgeable religious people, no matter what their denomination, one on one rather than listening to sermons.

Having read the bible through myself, I believe that most people are confused and disturbed by reading much of the bible, particularly some passages from the old testament. It's much easier to live according to a few simple platitudes than to try to handle the complexity of the whole thing.

There are those of us who have read the whole bible,
and more than once...
have even taken a topic study of the bible ( as opposed to reading strait through)
I am one of Jehovah's witnesses,
we go though the bible every three years in our meetings,
( a few chapters a week, and it takes three years to get all the way through)
it is encourged to find that point in the bible,
not just take my word for it.
I talk to people about the bible a lot, and I find that many people only know from the bible what their parrents said,
or the preacher said, not having taken the time to read about it.
all the scriptuer qouted to me in conversations are usually the same bunch.
you know, the average person kinda knows about moses, and the 10 plagues,
but they don't know why the israelites were in slavery in the first place...
isn't that odd?
lol
I wish to encourage anyone to read it (any topic) in the bible,
or to ask someone if they don't know where it is found.

"Love", "be kind", and "treat people how you want to be treated" are not from the bible. They may be IN the bible, but people who have never read the bible know that loving people and being kind and treating others right is a good idea.

There are...2 bits in the OT that talk about homosexuals. TWO bits. None in the New Testement.
So they take those seriously. Take em all seriously. And there is this bit that says rebellious sons should be stoned to death at the city gates...
But you ask a serious question...why?
So...I think its becuase you want your diety to be like you. It's like the quote "you know you have the right god when he hates all the same people you do"
Sad :(

All people don't do what you say....
If a person focuses on only one verse, that's not so bad if by their life they live a life of unselfish service.
It's tough to generalize as a rule particularly when it comes to the topic of faith.
Blessings! :-)

if everybody could base their lives in theory like you just said, this would be a much better place.
