First of all, don't put anything on your retainer that you couldn't put directly in your mouth. Try soaking it in white vinigar, add a little bit of baking soda to have it react. If that doesn't work, soak it in lysterine mouth wash, or denture cleaner works also.

Soap and water. Than put it in a container of 1/2 water and 1/2 vinegar for a 1/2 hour. Rinse with water. Your good to go. Vinegar is the best disinfectant.

Soaking it in straight Listerine for an hour is fine. If you are concerned about that nt being adequate, just ask your dentist to soak it in their surgical grade stuff.

You are right not to use hot water, but if it's the kind with wires, it's fairly resistant to heat. You can't go crazy, but plain old dishwashing temperature should be okay. If it's the kind that goes over your teeth completely, do NOT use hot water! §

I had to disinfect a medical device before I swallowed it. (I know it sounds odd. I'm not giving details, please!) My alternative practitioner said an hour in hydrogen peroxide and an hour in alcohol would kill anything on it. (You can buy 90% solution, which is stronger than rubbing alcohol, if you want.) Then wash it with warm soapy water and rinse. So that's what I did. I am just fine.

You can do a disinfectant, then warm soapy water, followed by placing it in your mouth rinse for a couple of seconds just to give it a familiar taste when you put it back in your mouth---if not it will disgust you.

Simply wash it in warm water, and soak it in hydrogen peroxide. Rinse well, and you're ready to go. If you're really worried, a vinegar wash will kill germs, but be sure that you rinse really well - you don't want vinegar sitting on your teeth for any length of time.
Listerine will work as well, but it tastes awful and contains alcohol.

Well, you should never of course use hot water, but water a little warmer than room temperatur.

You should add a LITTLE bleach to the water, like 1 part bleach and 6 parts water to sanitize it. After that let it dry on it's on, or wipe with a paper towel. After that rinse off with warm water, WITHOUT bleach.
