I know it's something to do with your muscles relaxing, so I suppose my question should be why do you suffer involuntary muscle relaxation when severe fear strikes?

it is called your flight or fight syndrome. I am sure you have heard of it. When this happens, all of your bodys blood and attention goes into this, and not into what your bowels and bladder are doing, so hence- the rush- of both kinds.

It is a natural reaction, that occurs when in severe fright because of humans being prey many many thousands of years ago to sabre toothed tigers and such other like creatures
that would have taken a liking to the taste of us.
Thus it being a kinda defence mechanism, Lets put it this way, Would you being a sabre toothed tiger eat me smelling of 5hit and pi55?
I think not.
We as humans at this time in our evolution just haven't rid ourselves of this reaction.
Then again there has been many a time when Ive followed through when farting or a trickle of pi55 came out when laughing at something hilarious.
At the end of the day i don't think we will ever be safe of this effect :-)

There is actually another theory that once your bowels and bladder empty, it would make it easier to run away from prey because you are emptier and therefore lighter. Again, this is part of your flight or fight mechanism. However, I can't imagine it's very easy to run with pants full of crap! lol
