If I turn on my tv with the vcr off my reception is really poor (static & snow) - Not all of the channels just about 5 channels look bad (The other channels look fine).
But if I turn the vcr on & tune it to those channels, they look really clear.

maybe because the cable is connected to the VCR

Your antenna or cable is probably connected through the vcr. Take a look at the back of the vcr and tv to make sure everything is plugged in all the way. Also try unplugging the vcr from the tv and plugging the cable/antenna directly into the tv when you're not using the vcr.

Set the output from the vcr to channel 4, television to channel 4
go into set-up on the vcr menu. Select cable then go to auto-proram. Make sure you select CABLE. You can now use your
vcr as your tv tuner.

cable ? wires connect how ? vcr on corect chanel is the TV ? loose wires ? did you contact cable company ? also the video button on remote ? i have 3 settings on mine !
