We have the God-given ability to distinguish between the truth of the Scriptures and erroneous and deceptive doctrines propagated by demons. Although we are all exhorted to be spiritually discerning (Acts 17:11; 1 John 4:1), some in the body of Christ have been given the unique ability to “spot” the forgeries in doctrine that have plagued the church since the first century. But this does not involve a mystical, extra-biblical revelation or a voice from God. Rather, the spiritually discerning among us are so familiar with the Word of God that they instantly recognize what is contrary to it. They do not receive special messages from God; they use the Word of God to “test the spirits” to see which line up with God and which are in opposition to Him. The spiritually discerning are those who “rightly divide” (2 Timothy 2:15) the Word of God in a thoughtful and diligent manner.

Demons are always destructive and evil to humans. They exist in a lower dimension than our physical world. Angels are beings of cosmic power. Big difference. There are also many other kinds of non-material beings. Ghosts (5 different kinds), spirits, 'fairies', 'aliens', and a few others. If you think a non-material being must be either a demon or an angel, you are mistaken.

Holy angels that come from God give you holy fear. As seen from many instances in the bible the first thing that the holy angels say to you when you encounter them is "fear not" because they may look awesome and full of light. Demons look aweful and they usually are foul smelling and they will enjoy seeing you fearful and being harmed and harrassed all the time.

1Cr 12:3 Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and [that] no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost.
If you suspect you are dealing with a demonic spirit you should contact your minister. If you feel you have knowledge in this area and/or training then one test is to apply 1 Cr 12;3.
I Cr 13;8a, Love never fails!!!!!

Trust me you will know the difference,,demons bring lots of condemnation and it is cool in the area they are in,,,Angels will bring love and peace,,you may have alittle fear but more of the wondering why feeling instead of fear,,and it is warmer and pleasent feeling around the area they are..you can ask both question but you will be lied to by the demons..

My advice: don't let yourself get heavily influenced by the comings and goings of spiritual beings. We can't understand them. They are not for us to understand. In fact, it will only lead to confusion.
Concentrate on living a Godly life. That's challenge enough.
To answer your question, the Bible has two criteria:
1. The "visitor" cannot say or do anything that contradicts the written word of God.
2. If commanded in the name of God, the "visitor" must depart. Such is the power of God's covenant with humanity.

I know that the bible states that demons are not to be feared as long as you keep God in your heart and pray. Not sure if demons can be seen though. I think they are no longer able to take human form like they once did.

The only time I ran into something, it was a dark thing, and it scared the living doody out of me. It teaches you a healthy respect for things when you can feel something looking at you like your're on the buffet.

I dunno. Every time an angel appears in the Bible, the first thing it says is: "Don't be afraid." Makes me think there's something scary about them. And if I was a demon, I wouldn't want to look like I was bad news. Maybe first impressions are wrong.
