Get a three button suit - you'll use it later on. It's classy with a modern touch. Get one in black or dark gray. Congratulations to your mom's friend.

A nice suit jacket, matching pants, white shirt and tie would be nice.
Make sure your shoes match the color of the suit jacket, and make sure they are polished too.
Nothing looks tackier than a nice jacket worn with sneakers! Ewwe.
Good Luck
PS
Usually only the peeps in the wedding wear a tux.

All eyes are on the Bride and Groom,
dress comfortably, shave, clean fingernails, a tie at least. Have fun.
Unless you are a Groomsman, there is no need for a tux.
Generally the only ones in really formal dress at a wedding are the Principals, Bride, Groom, Bridesmaids, Best man, Maid of Honor, Bridesmaids and Ushers, and the Bride and Groom's Family.
Dress like you would for any trip to a church.

find out how formal the wedding is going to be and dress accordingly. For most weddings nice slacks (dress pants), a nice button front shirt, and a tie are appropriate. Suit or Jacket is really only necessary if it is a very formal wedding.
You should not wear a tux unless youre going to be IN the wedding not just attending it.

A suit and tie would be your best choice. Don't waste your money on renting a tux, unless it is a black tie event. Wear a shirt and tie that go with the colors of the season (i.e deep red for fall). Have fun!

You don't need a tux unless you are actually in the wedding party. If you were right in front of me, I could tell you what to where, unfortunately, I don't know you so you could go to the mall and someone in a department store help you out. That's what they get paid for after all.

You can't go wrong with a blue or black or grey suit. Go to Macys talk to someone in the Men's department, they're very helpful.
You don't want to wear jeans to someone's wedding, it's rude. Normally I would agree with the person who said you could wear whatever you would normally wear to church, but that's just not true anymore. Most people I see going to church are dressed like bums, jeans and shorts and flip flops are not acceptable.

well you don really have to wear a tux though.
you could just dress up in pants and a shirt [long sleeved] of course. dressing up doesn't equates to formality you know. it's best to be comfortable yet smart and casual at the same time. you could replace the pants with a pair of denims to go along with the shirt [preferably a slim cut] which would fit to the shpae of your body nicely. unbutton the top or 1st 2 buttons..maybe a shirt like the one aiken is wearing. it would look nice when its worn fitting. http://www.chemkim.com/clay_rs6.jpg . the one by ricky martin http://www.familie-im-web.de/familie/cybermusik/stars/r/ricky_martin/ricky_martin_011_150.jpg .
well those are shirts. if you'd preferred it with a suit perhaps the following would help

Please don't wear jeans. A nice pair of pants with a button-up shirt and tie. Colors won't matter unless you want to match her wedding colors, but then you might end up standing in her line...
Kidding. But just no levis. For you and your mother's sake.

Just wear nice dress pants and shirt, or a sports coat/jacket if you have one.
