No not for that. He'll be fine, as long as you treat it. Try some Frontline or Frontline Plus, it's supposed to deal with fleas and ticks. I think Advantix works for ticks as well, but not Advantage. I'd pluck them off as well, or have the vet do it if it's that bad.
You're probably seeing the babies(grown up) now. House might be infested with them as well and the yard-so keep an eye out. If need be, get something for the house, or call an exterminator and pick up some kind of yard treatment as well. Can get that from Walmart. I'd recommend some kind of spray though, and be sure to hit the trees/branches that are hanging low. It'll take a few weeks, but it'll work.
I had tick infestation from one of my dogs I had gotten from the pound. At first it was just one or two I plucked off. Then a couple weeks later, there was more, probably hiding under his fur. I know they were from the pound, because I'd never had them on my other dog. It sucks, I feel for ya!!
Another thing, when your dog goes out, does he have an enclosed/certain area, or is he free roaming? I ask because if he's free roaming, he might be getting into a wooded area or something that is tick infested.

You DON'T put a dog down for having ticks! Obviously you are not using a preventative on him, go out and get some Advantage or Frontline. Where is he getting the ticks from? Obviously you are letting your go where there are ticks, and if you found ticks on your dog a few weeks ago, why did you not get some flea/tick control and why have you not noticed the ticks until now...do you ever look at your dog, or pet him?? Go out and buy some medicine for you dog. And treat your house as well as there are now probably ticks in the carpeting, etc.

Your first step would be to take the dog to the vet, then get a Preventic collar. When my husband and I picked up our new puppy, the original owners had not taken care of him. He had HUNDREDS of ticks all over. I initially reacted like you and was totally grossed out. I was ready to give him away that same day. But, we took our new puppy to the vet the next morning and the doctor gave us a PREVENTIC collar. It was such a lifesaver!
The collar took away our tick problem completely within days. I put some information below about the collar, and I've added the website. This collar was the only thing that allowed our puppy to remain a member of our family. He is now an 8-month-old inside dog and has been tick free ever since!
Preventic Collars:
Provide safe and effective control of ticks for up to three months
Prevent new ticks from attaching and feeding within 48 hours after application
Provide over 97% effectiveness against ticks for up to three months*
Kill and detach ticks
Are water resistant
Are for use on dogs only
Fit dogs of almost any size
Are safe when used as directed

Nope, they shouldn't have to put her down. What they will do is remove all the ticks they can find, and give her a good bath with a flea & tick shampoo. They'll give her a flea & tick dip after the bath -- kind of like a leave-in condition with flea & tick medication in it. Then they'll tell you that you need to be using something like K-9 Advantage to prevent this from happening again. They'll also give you a list of symptoms to watch for in case she caught something from the ticks. If she does get sick, take her back to the vet because the earlier they start treatment ... the better chance your dog has to make a full recovery.

Don't worry it's fixable. She needs a good flea and tick bath, along with Frontline treatment. She may be slightly anemic from the ticks sucking all of the blood out of her, but your vet can probably give her an iron shot to help her out. Just get her to the vet tomorrow. Good luck.

Your dog will not be euthanized. You need to get your doggy washed by a professional groomer who can remove the ticks and use a shampoo special for skin soothing. While the groomer is washing the dog you need to get your house cleaned and get rid of the ticks (bug bombs etc.). Also you need to go to the vet and get the dog checked for problems (from the ticks) and get some medicine for her/him. I think the dog will be fine you just need to love her/him through it and take care of her. My mom is a professional groomer and I know these things. I hope your dog gets better!
GOOD LUCK!!! : )

your dog will not be put down for ticks i can assure you that. i have never heard of such a thing. maggots on the other hand would be a different story. just get rid of them, shampoo and brush and use something like frontline or an equivalent. i wouldn't waste my money going to the vet, but that is up to you.

I've never lost a dog to tick and flea infestaion. I can recomend putting garlic in her food though. It helps with flea and tick also go to walmart and get 7 dust for your yard and it's safe to put on the dog also. TIP:for now on when you pull off ticks put them in a zip lock bag and take them with you when you go to the vet so the vet can see what kind of ticks they are so they will know if they have to test your dog for any diseases that ticks might carry.
