Modern railcars are approx 12 feet across, and anywhere from 40-100 feet long. The engines in a consist are the same 12 foot dimension from right to left side, but typically measure around 75 feet long.

It depends on what the application of the train is on how long it is.

Mixed freight, grain, and coal are some of the longest trains... freight is sometimes light, while loaded coal is very heavy.

Syrup (cornsyrup) trains are some of the shorter ones, but also one of the heavier trains.

Not sure what exactly you mean by the "dimension" of a freight train.....but, I think you are asking how long is a typical freight train. So, let me answer based on that assumption.

The length of a freight train actually depends on a variety of factors, such as the traction power available, the gradient of the route, the weight of each freight wagon etc. But, a typical freight train can be anywhere between 75 to 110 coaches/bogies long. I hope this is what you were looking for.

It isn't usual to see trains that are more than a mile long.
