About three years ago, I started gaining some weight. In that amount of time, I went from 5'8 1/2" & 165 lbs., to three years later, 5'10" & 185 lbs. Now, I know that you don't gain 20 lbs. when you grow 1 1/2 inches.

But I am still pretty happy w/ how I look. I am 5'10", so that weight does stretch itself out. I think I have a small, to medium frame, because I can take my fingers around my wrist and my middle finger can touch my thumb just fine. And also because when I was a kid, I was a skinny kid.

But my fat goes to weird places. It does not go to my stomach. Yes, I am 185 lbs, but my stomach is basically flat. My fat mostly goes under my arms. I absolutely refuse to wear tank tops or shirts w/ no sleeves, because of the fat under my arms. Fat also goes to my inner, upper thighs.

In juniors, I wear a size 18 pant. Though, I do not look as fat as most women do, who wear 18 pants. My fat also goes to my hips, making me very wide.

Is this called something?

Yes, it is called genetics (I am serious - you are a classic pear shape .. along with most women) No fear there is hope (and help)

I hear questions such as this on a daily basis, both from our clients and from people standing in the grocery line with me who want to know what exercises I do for such "toned” legs. Spot reduction works only in the laundry room - there is simply no such thing as localized fat loss.

The reality is - muscles which are stimulated with exercise will increase in size, regardless of what type of exercise gadget is used to “tone” an area. While resistance training is vital to overall fat loss and sculpting the body that you want, “overtraining” an area with the hopes of “toning” it will lead to muscle being added disproportionately and the area getting larger. If you build muscle more quickly that you strip fat in any area , it will get bigger.

Many people focus on exercising a particular body part which is hidden by fatty tissue in an effort to "burn away" the localized fat and expose toned muscles. No amount of dips, lunges or abdominal work will “burn” the fat off in a particular area –. Unfortunately, most people cannot see their beautiful toned muscles because they are covered by a layer of body fat .

That having been said here are the facts regarding “spot reducing, toning and “firming”

1. Body areas which are not “toned” simply contain excess body fat.

2. Physiologically, muscle is always firm

3. our bodies are genetically preprogrammed to carry a certain amount in a particular body area.

4. the area of the body that first notices a decrease in body fat will vary from person to person – it is genetically pre - determined

5. In order to lose fat from your body an energy “deficit” must occur (ie” you must burn more calories than you consume

6. it is impossible to “firm” fat , nor can you “tone” muscle

7. No one can predict which area of their body will lose fat first

8. Eventually you WILL experience fat loss in the more difficult areas.

Tips for toned firm legs

1. Perform a well rounded resistance program at least 2 days a week to add lean body mass (muscle) to your frame, sculpt and shape your body . This will increase your ability to burn fat and food calories as well as your ability to sculpt your body just as you would like it. (each pound of muscle burns approximately 40 calories metabolically, each pound of fat about 3)

2. Perform a minimum of 3 30 minute sessions of cardiovascular training each week to stimulate fat loss

3. Watch your serving sizes and portions, eat a balanced diet of carbohydrates, fats and proteins . Calories DO count. The average person who is 20 or more pounds overweight, underestimates their caloric intake by nearly 800 CALORIES PER DAY!!!
I added a link at the bottom about proper serving sizes and portions which will give you awesome on this and give you a great head start

4. Use common sense and keep refined sugars, sodas and processed foods to a minimum

5. Drink a minimum of 64 ounces of water each day

Enjoy not having fat in your waist area. That will change as you grow older, especially if you have kids. Size 18 juniors is a lot smaller than size 18 misses. You can use weights to help with your arms and there are many exercises which target the hip area.
No. It is not "called anything"

Yes it is called a pear shape- one who's weight gain tends to deposit in the lower body. That is in contrast to an apple who's gain tends to accumulate in the abdomen.
Minor weight lifting and cardio exercise would streamline your weight and change your body composition/shape.
You will have better energy & moods, and be really happy you stopped it in it's tracks in this early stage where it is not so discouraging, easier to give up, harder on your overall health, and taxing on your self image.
Do this for yourself, and constantly remind yourself that you are worth it.

too many calories for your metabolic rate or amount of activity
to burn .. the excess is saved as fat . this may be the kind of cuisine or proportionate amounts .....less simple carbs fats oils
more vegetables avoid meats chicken fish dairy products and drink lots of water . when one gets dehydrated it kicks in mechanisms that add fat as well as improper foods as too much sugar or simple carbohydrates . when your body processes
sugar to glycogen and storage is filled then it processes carbs to
sugar and this goes to fat storage hope I got that right anyway you should get the jest of it .... hope you pull your balance in line
it's really much much more complicated and may be hormonal as well .....I suggest a weight management physician !
good luck to u it took two years before the specialist for me to get it right .......
