No, Christianity preaches that as we rely upon God to strengthen and sactify us we can strive for the high upward calling upon our lives in Christ Jesus. All Christians are called to be growing in holiness and to be utilizing their gifts in service to one another. There is nothing in the Scriptures about being half hearted or settling for second best.
Matthew 5:48 You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.
Hebrews 12:1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.
Philippians 3:12 Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. 13 Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. 15 Let those of us who are mature think this way, and if in anything you think otherwise, God will reveal that also to you.

Mediocrity is accepted in the arts by Christians, but I don't know if it is "preached."
[edit] I like that I got a thumbs down by someone. I am a Christian and a professional artist.

In reality "Christianity" has very little in the way of coherent preaching about anything, except maybe the Nicean Creed.

The Bible says that God wants us to live Godly lives, to "be discerning", to purify ourselves, to be righteous without being self-righteous, to live in Christian communities, and to spread the word. It also says that God wants us to be our personal best, and to reach it by allowing Him into our lives. There's nothing there about achieving excellence in the sense of making ourselves better than others, or to entertain our own egos, or competition for its own sake.
Christianity is about putting God first, not allowing the world to make you into a monster, because it is the world against which we exist. (Satan is in charge of the world right now).
'Hope this helps. Keep asking tough questions!

Maybe an example of what point you were trying to make would help this question. As it stands, I will have to say no.
