Simply put, you add yeast to apple juice, let it do its thing for a couple weeks and there you have it. That's the basics, but there's a lot more to it in the fine details.
Sanitation is the most important detail. Bacterial contaminatin contributes to the cider fermenting wrong, funky, or turning to vinegar.
Second is having the proper tools and equipment (the minimum is quite, er...minimal)
Third is the ingredients...the apple juice, the yeast, any additional nutrients.
The easiest way to start is to use the one gallon glass jars of pasteurized apple juice (be absolutely sure there is no sodium benzoate as a preservative...it kills the yeast). Add your yeast (not baking yeast, it will leave the cider tasting yeasty...very yeasty...not desirable) and put an airlock on the bottle (can be a rubber stopper with a hole in it...have a tube from the hole to a jar of water...keeps oxygen and bugs out, lets CO2 out). Let it ferment for about 2 weeks (until the bubbles in your water jar essetially stop...about 1 small bubble per minute). Siphon the cider off of the sediment on the bottom into a new, sanitized bottle and let it sit for another 2 weeks or so. It should be ready to drink by then.
The yeast, stopper with a hole, nutrients, sanitizer, and other tidbits can be found at your local home brewing store (do a google search for home brewing suppliers in your area). You can also get tips for sanitizing, expanding your brewing if you care to, and other things while you're there.
You shouldn't spend more than about $5 on what you *need* to get started with the gallon jug method (a dollar for the yeast, a dollar for the stopper, etc).
If you don't have a brew store nearby, you can order online here:
