That depends on the pain. If you are experiencing the worst headache ever in your life, you might want to call 911 or go to the emergency room as you could be experiencing a stroke. If you have a history of migraines and this is a typical pain for you, asprin, caffeine, dimmed lighting, and lying still can help to alleviate some of your symptoms.

Headaches can spoil your day and many a times, the chronic headaches can last for more than a week. Chronic headaches are the headaches that cannot be treated with the usual, over the counter treatments. They are so serious that you are unable to do your normal activities. There are stronger medicines available in the market to treat this problem. But they can have serious side effects. Opting for natural treatments is the best solution.

Prevention is better than cure. Find out the causes of your headaches. Certain stressors like bright lights, loud noises or differences in air pressure can cause the headache. Determining and avoiding the cause of your headache, can easily solve the problem. For headaches due to air pressure, treat yourself with an allergy medication. This will adjust the pressure within the sinuses and ease the headache due to weather.

If you are addicted to a certain substance like caffeine that you drink at a specific time, you can have a headache if you avoid the beverage. If you stay away from it, the headache will vanish after a week when the withdrawal process stops.

You need to go to your doctor. I used to work in the pharamacy at a government hospital for 3 years. The most common medications I had seen prescribed by the doctors is immitrex for severe migraine, which we give 9 pills for a month supply. I had problems with patients yelling and cursing me over the telephone because they ran out. The problem was that they didn't follow the directions to the doctors and the pharamicists in how to take the medication correctly. The doctor has to see you and needs your background health information to be sure if this medication is the right and safe for you.

Do you have any migraine meds like Imitrex? If not, go lie down in a dark room, and put a cool washcloth over your eyes. RELAX! Try to sleep. (and take some aspirin, excedrin, etc....) If you continue to get them, see your doctor.
