Occasionally my heart beats very rapidly, at least double the beats per minute that it should. It can last over 30 minutes at a time. My doctor said I have to have an EKG WHILE it is going on to determine the cause. I had a heart monitor for a while but it didn't do anything while I had it. I was not doing anything out of the ordinary when it happened. Can any medical people answer this?

I had the same symptoms you are having. I counted my heart rate a couple of time during these "palpitations", and it was up over 200 and stuck there I went to a cardiologist and they put me on a beta blocker (a pill) and they kept dismissing the problem. I am a RN, so once when my heart started beating really fast, I took off to the ER and got a 12 lead EKG to capture the rythm. I took the EKG to a doctor Kreigh Moulton who is a electropysiologist and he diagnosed me and fixed the problem in an outpatient procedure called a EP study and a radiofrequency ablation. I was having something called AV node re entry. You may be having spurts of a fib, or a flutter or some other abnormal rythm. You need to see a electrophysiologist who is a cardiologist who specializes in the electrical circuits of the heart and he can fix your problem. Good luck.

What you have described makes me think of the term "tachycardia" which is an abnormally rapid heart rate, usually taken to be over 100 beats per minute. It can be related to the sinoatrial node, ventricular and atrial parts of the heart. There can be other causes as well. All can be diagnosed and treated. You may have to have further or more extensive testing done such as dye run through your veins and pictures taken. Many tests can be performed. I wish you well w/ this and try to stay away from caffeines or other stimulants such as is in the energy drinks so available.

You need to wear the heart monitor for a longer period of time or go to the emergency room when your heart is racing on you so you can get a ekg while it is doing this.
It is sometimes normal to have heart palpatations but they shouldn't last that long.

Caffeine, alcohol, stress, exercise and smoking can cause rapid heart rate. It could also be a thyroid problem, however a blood test can rule that out. As long as it stops & is not irregular, you should not stress too much about it. If you can manage to have another Holter, you probably should. Good health to you!

It's probably caused by a rhythm disturbance known as SUpraventricular tachycardia. (SVT) You may have to get referred to a cardiologist who can make the proper diagnosis (sometimes structural problems can cause this to happen).

Don't wait too long-- since people in SVT have been known to develop clots in their hearts.

Good luck

(its probably not related to diet or hormonal problems--probably genetic-- but see a Cardiologist)
