Is it decoration or is there a purpose?

The apple is only put on the pig after it was roasted. I've seen it in our place where hundreds of pigs are roasted everyday and their mouths are tied to the pole. The apple is just an appetizer and a decoration. Red (which can be the color of the apple), in psychology creates the feeling of being hungry.

I think it's just for decoration, to make a roasted pig look less disgusting.

I'm not totally sure, but I think it helps block the opening of the mouth so that the inside can retain enough heat to cook the pig all the way through. But in any case....ewwwwwwww.....
