I recently looked after my brother's dog for two weeks while he was away on holiday. We get on brilliantly (me and the dog, that is) and because I have a huge field very near by, I took him out maybe 7 - 8 times per day because I love to see him so happy, plus he's a very 'outside' kind of dog. Now my brother has returned and the dog has gone back. I'm now riddled with guilt because I know that, at best, he'll only get two walks per day. I picture him pining for me and the walks, and becoming depressed because of all the built up energy that can't escape. Did I spoil him? and will he be okay with just two walks a day?

Hey, Bill, I looked happy cuz that's the way you wanted to see me. But I'm a dog, right? What do dogs like to do (apart from female dogs)? They like to eat, sleep, fart, and lick their bollocks. All that running around after sticks, man! that's for the humans. Just so they'll feed us. So. grin, Bill: I'm a happy dog again.

it depends on the walks. 2 short ambles around the block, the same route every day is a waste of time. 2 walks, where at least one is off the lead, wild galloping and running about, is better, but 5 walks is even better. If the walks are the only chances the dog gets to go outside or go to the toilet then it is just not enough.Perhaps if your brother lives close enough you could say how much you enjjoyed walking the dog and would it be possible to walk him every day. Don't let on that you think he is not a good owner as this will put his back up and he will refuse, but if you put it that it is for YOU, then he may say yess. Tell him you are envious becuase you aren't in a position to keep a dog of your own and would really appreciate being able to walk his dog.
Good luck.

Hi Billy,
I think you did a lovely favour for your brother and his dog. You really have no need to worry. The dog had a wonderful time with you and will remember it. Dogs have fantastic memories. When your brother came back and the dog went back to him, he will have been over the moon his owner was back and he will have slipped straight back into his old routine. He will not be feeling deprived at all. He knows that this is his routine with his owner. The same way he will remember his time with you as the brilliant holiday he had. You did nothing wrong and have nothing to feel guilty for. You brother had his holiday and you gave his dog his own holiday. However it does sound like you miss the pooch a little, maybe it's time for you to have your own dog, you would certainly make a brilliant owner and next time you look after your brothers dog, he will have his own K9 playmate too. I wish there were more like you Billy. :-)

I would say at least 3 times a day but 2 is probably the minimum so the dog is comfortable

I take each of my guys out for at least a 45 minute walk each day, they are high energy dogs,
they really dont need two walks a day but if you have the time to walk twice a day good for you and the dog!
But 45 minutes a day should be good!

Two walks is not enough for any dog. Maybe if you were able to walk the dog so much, you should ask your brother if it would be okay to go to his house when he is out and walk the dog.

a dog need 4 hours a day of fresh air he doesnt need to go walk ..just to be outside its good for him..and makes him happy but everybody knows that we dont always have time to go walk or watch the dog 4 hours a dog i'd say 2-3 walks a day ..if your brother have time ask him to bring the dog to the field for 15-20 minutes and hell be okay.(p.s dogs dont have the notion of time)

Well you did give the dog exercise but the dog will get back in to his routine you can walk for miles and the dog would get back in plonk down but if you pick the lead up again they would be there as if they had never been out so don't worry they would soon get into their old routine

It depends on the dog and it's individual needs. It sounds like he needs long walks each day. If the two walks are long (1hr+) then the dog should be fine. Dogs tend to adjust to their circumstances too.
